Sheet moulding compounds based on thermosetting unsaturated polyester resins contain a saturated liquid polyester having a melting point below 30.degree.C, for example polypropylene adipate or polypropylene sebacate to prevent shrinkage during moulding, and a thermoplastic polymer consisting essentially of polymerized caprolactone units to prevent exudation of the saturated liquid polyester during moulding.

Thermosetting moulding compositions

A process for the preparation of moulded articles by the compression moulding at elevated temperatures in matched metal moulds of moulding compounds based on thermosettable unsaturated polyester resins, where at least one of the filler materials in the moulding compounds has a particle diameter greater than the width of flash channel of the mould used in order to enable moulded articles of improved surface finish to be produced.

Moulding process for unsaturated polyester resins containing filler

A process for the preparation of unsaturated polyester resin based sheet moulding compounds in which the compound is matured by including a gelling agent for the copolymerisable monomer in the resin matrix and subjecting the sheet moulding compound to a temperature sufficient to cause the gelling agent to gel the copolymerisable monomer without activating the polymerisation initiator.

Preparation of moulding compounds

Sheet moulding compound (S.M.C.) is made by impregnating glass fibre with hot polyester resin matrix containing a soluble gelling agent, e.g. sodium or potassium stearate which causes the matrix to gel on cooling.
