A propulsion system is provided, wherein the propulsion system includes an afterburner assembly. The afterburner assembly including: an exhaust section and a fuel injector assembly that is operable to inject fuel in the exhaust section. The fuel injector assembly includes a plurality of fuel injection members. The plurality of fuel injection members defines a hot zone and a cold zone. The cold zone is positioned to provide a noise insulation barrier for the hot zone.

A high-speed, air-breathing propulsion engine includes an inlet configured to compress incoming air, a fuel injector configured to supply a fuel for mixing with the compressed incoming air to form a fuel-air mixture, and a combustor configured to burn the fuel-air mixture. Diffuser apparatus for turbine frames and outlet guide vanes are disclosed. An example diffuser is integrated into a turbine engine. The example diffuser includes a plurality of struts extending between an inner portion and an outer portion of the turbine engine; and a plurality of flowpath surfaces supported by the plurality of struts. The example plurality of flowpath surfaces extends circumferentially within the turbine engine at a plurality of radial spans to control diffusion of air flow within the turbine engine.

In a jet engine having a core that sources a first flow of fluid and a component (such as a fan, a pump, and/or a bleed line) that sources a second flow of fluid, and where the first flow of fluid will typically have, at least during ordinary operation, a higher temperature than the second flow of fluid, at least one flow aperture formed by a first passageway to receive at least a portion of the aforementioned second flow of fluid, wherein that first passageway is comprised of at least one material that (by design and intent) deflects as a function of temperature such that a flow of the second flow of fluid through the at least one flow aperture is thereby desirably modulated.

A flow conditioning system for a duct. The flow conditioning system includes a preconditioner that modifies upstream fluid flow that is maldistributed, providing predictable downstream flow to fluid flowing within the duct. The directional flow conditioner also includes a stationary flow geometry structure downstream of the preconditioner. The stationary flow geometry structure further conditions the upstream fluid flow from the preconditioner to provide a downstream flow with a substantially uniform flow profile. The flow conditioning system transforms upstream fluids having a maldistributed flow profile such as may be caused by a component, structure or obstruction within the duct to a substantially uniform flow profile downstream of the flow conditioning system within the available axial duct length so that the fluid may interact efficiently with equipment such as heat exchangers positioned within the duct downstream of the flow conditioning system.

A closed trapped vortex apparatus includes: a tubular structure having a structural wall, the structural wall forming a cavity within the tubular structure, the structural wall having a lower boundary wall forming a boundary between the cavity and a core flow passage; at least one driver hole passing through the structural wall; an ignition source communicating with the cavity; a fuel source communicating with the cavity; and a plurality of flame tubes extending through the lower boundary wall of the tubular structure at preselected locations so as to provide communication between the cavity and the core flow passage.

Closed trapped vortex cavity pilot for a gas turbine engine augmentor

A method of assembling a gas turbine engine is provided. The method includes providing at least one heat exchanger assembly including a heat exchanger and a mixer extending downstream from the heat exchanger. The mixer includes a plurality of windows formed therein. The method also includes coupling the at least one heat exchanger assembly within a bypass duct of the engine such that the at least one heat exchanger assembly is coupled to at least one of an outer engine casing and an inner engine casing of the turbine engine.

Methods and apparatus for mixing fluid in turbine engines

A method of assembling a gas turbine engine includes providing at least one heat exchanger assembly including a heat exchanger and a lobed mixer extending downstream from the heat exchanger, wherein the mixer includes a plurality of lobes that each define a first chute and at least one second chute that extends between each pair of adjacent spaced-apart lobes, and coupling the at least one heat exchanger assembly within a bypass duct of the engine such that the at least one heat exchanger assembly is coupled to at least one of an outer engine casing and an inner engine casing of the turbine engine.

A method for regulating fluid flow through a gas turbine engine is provided. The method includes coupling an outer fairing to a radially outer duct wall and coupling an inner fairing to a radially inner duct wall. An annular valve is coupled between the radially outer and the radially inner duct walls such that an outer bypass flow area is at least partially defined between the annular valve and the outer fairing, and such that an inner bypass flow area is at least partially defined between the annular valve and the inner fairing. The annular valve is selectively positioned between a first operational position and a second operational position, such that at least one of the outer bypass and the inner bypass flow areas is varied during a transition from a first turbine operation to a second turbine operation.
