Systems and methods for displaying position sensitive datalink messages on avionics displays are provided. In one embodiment, a flight deck instrument display system for an aircraft comprises: a flight plan display screen that displays a graphical representation of at least a part of an aircraft's planned flight path together with symbology representing a position of the aircraft with respect to the aircraft's planned flight path; wherein the flight plan display screen further displays at least one symbol positioned along the graphical representation of at least a part of the aircraft's planned flight path that indicates a point of applicability for a received uplink datalink message.

Systems and methods for displaying position sensitive datalink messages on avionics displays

In one embodiment, an aerospace system is provided. The aerospace system comprises at least one display unit configured to display flight data and a memory configured to store one or more flight plan associations. Each flight plan association is an association between a data link message and a respective waypoint in a flight plan. The aerospace system also comprises a processing unit configured to determine when each respective waypoint in the flight plan is reached based on a comparison of current location data to the flight plan. When each respective waypoint is reached, the processing unit is configured to identify any data link messages associated with the respective waypoint based on the flight plan associations and to direct the at least one display unit to display a respective notification for each identified data link message associated with the respective waypoint.

System and method of integrating data link messages with a flight plan

A graphical in-flight message representation system comprises a sensor configured to measure a characteristic of a flight of an aircraft and a communication device configured to send and receive in-flight messages. An in-flight message is a message communicated during the flight of the aircraft. The system also comprises a display unit configured to display a graphical flight progress indicator and one or more message icons, each of the one or more message icons corresponding to a respective in-flight message. The graphical flight progress indicator is representative of the characteristic of the flight measured by the sensor. Each of the one or more message icons are displayed in location relative to the graphical flight progress indicator based on the measured characteristic of the flight when the respective in-flight message was communicated.

A method of displaying aircraft operating and position information with an electronic display unit comprises determining a position of a first aircraft at an airport; determining an optimum speed range of the first aircraft; determining a first aircraft speed of the first aircraft; displaying on a screen of the display unit a map of at least part of the airport; displaying a first aircraft symbol on the map, the first aircraft symbol displayed in a position on the map indicative of position of the first aircraft; and displaying an optimum speed range symbol having a lower bound end and a higher bound end in a position on the map such that the first aircraft symbol is between the lower bound end and the higher bound end when the first aircraft speed is within the optimum speed range.

In one embodiment an in-aircraft system that implements a flight planning module is provided. The flight planning module is configured to display on the display unit a pending flight plan and implement a first button associated with a display of the pending flight plan. The first button, if selected, directs the one or more processing units to convert the pending flight plan to a format for sending in a datalink message, and to cause the pending flight plan to be sent to a ground station in a downlink datalink message without human input to a message applications module, the message applications module including instructions to display information corresponding to datalink messages on a display unit and to maintain a message log of datalink messages.

Systems and methods for improving situational awareness on an in-trails procedures display. A radar system transmits a radar signal and receives and stores weather radar reflectivity values into a three-dimensional buffer. A processor determines whether any of the stored weather reflectivity values indicate the presence of a weather hazard and generates one or more weather hazard icons based on the stored weather reflectivity values. An in-trail procedures display device displays the generated weather hazard icons. Wake vortex information for other aircraft is generated and outputted on the in-trail procedures display. Also, the processor receives a request for an altitude change and generates an alert when the aircraft is determined not to be cleared to transition to the requested altitude based on a projected transition, any existing weather hazards, wake vortices of proximate aircraft, and in-trail procedures.

Methods and systems for presenting weather hazard information on an in-trail procedures display

Methods and systems are provided for determining a potential conflict between a first aircraft and a second aircraft on an airport surface. In an embodiment, the methods include defining a first aircraft boundary around the first aircraft, based on data related to dimensions of the first aircraft, defining a second aircraft boundary around the second aircraft, based on data related to dimensions of the second aircraft, and determining a potential conflict exists between the first and the second aircraft, based on the first aircraft boundary and the second aircraft boundary.

A taxi method for an aircraft having a primary thrust engine taxi system and an electric taxi system is provided. The method involves obtaining aircraft and airport status data and generating therefrom taxi drive information indicative of the relative cost of taxiing the aircraft along a predetermined route using the electric taxi system versus the aircraft engine taxi system. The taxi drive index information is presented to a user.

Methods and system are provided for alerting an aircraft crew member of a potential conflict between a first aircraft and a second aircraft on a first taxiway. Real-time positioning data related to the first aircraft on the first taxiway is monitored. Data related to real-time positioning of the second aircraft is monitored. A prediction is made as to whether the second aircraft will enter the first taxiway, based on the monitored data related to real-time positioning of the second aircraft. The potential conflict is indicated on the first taxiway, if a prediction is made that the second aircraft will enter the first taxiway.

Methods and systems for alerting an aircraft crew member of a potential conflict between aircraft on a taxiway

A system for monitoring a volume of space surrounding an aircraft having a plurality of extremity portions includes a plurality of sensors. Each sensor is disposed at a respective corresponding one of the aircraft extremity portions. Each sensor is configured to generate an image of a monitored area covering a predetermined distance from the extremity portion at which the sensor is disposed. A processing device is configured to determine, from an image generated by a first sensor of the plurality, a characteristic of an object within the monitored area covering the predetermined distance from the extremity portion at which the first sensor is disposed. The processing device is further configured to generate a signal in response to determining the object characteristic.

Aircraft collision avoidance system

An airborne processor is linked to a ground-based, vehicle based, or satellite-based supplier of approaching aircraft data and/or terrain data, including airfield structures. The processor also has access to the aircraft's state, e.g. position, speed, intended route, aircraft dimensional data, or the like. Algorithms within the processor calculate a zone of protection about the aircraft in light of aircraft type, turning radius, and other identifying data. The processor combines the present and estimated future positions of the aircraft with the approaching aircraft and/or airfield structure data, and creates an alert to the crew if a threat of a ground incursion is detected. The display provides a visual of the zone of protection about the aircraft, and approaching aircraft and/or airfield structure to draw the attention of the crew to the threat.

According to an example embodiment, a method includes receiving data about an aircraft that is moving on a surface using at least a first wheel, the data descriptive of physical characteristics of the aircraft, calculating a first path of the first wheel along the surface using the data, and displaying the first path in relation to a boundary between a first area of the surface and a second area of the surface, the first area safe for the aircraft, the second area unsafe for the aircraft.

A method for facilitating a financial decision for 4-dimensional navigation of a vehicle includes receiving navigation information for the vehicle. A current location of the vehicle is determined. Data associated with at least one predetermined location of a plurality of predetermined locations is retrieved. A range of costs for said vehicle, representative of the at least one predetermined arrival time for the at least one predetermined location, is estimated. The range of costs is associated with a minimum value of the navigational information and a maximum value of the navigational information. An indicator representative of at least one cost of the range of costs is displayed.

Financial decision aid for 4-D navigation

A pilot is maneuvering an aircraft on a ground surface, such as a runway or taxiway. On a cockpit display, the pilot sees a scaled aircraft symbol overlaying a moving map on a cockpit display. The aircraft symbol represents the aircraft, while the moving map represents the ground surface on which the aircraft is located. The aircraft symbol depicts its nose gear and main gear with respect to the ground surface. The nose gear on the aircraft symbol rotates based on tiller angle. The cockpit display also shows edge guidance lines that allow the pilot to line up the main gear, while providing a margin of safety. Predictive symbology also overlays the moving map to provide an indication of whether the aircraft can safely turn on the ground surface.

A graphics display system is provided. The graphics display system comprises a display element, a database adapted to store thrust profile data, and at least one processing unit coupled to the display element and the database. The at least one processing unit is adapted to process thrust profile data from the database and to transmit control signals to the display element to display at least one spatial representation of thrust profile data associated with an aircraft.
