In a reactor, for the continuous polymerization of feed materials to higher viscosity process fluid, comprising a vertical, hollow vessel having an inlet for the introduction of feed materials, an outlet for the discharge of process product and an exhaust for reaction vapors; and means for heating the vessel; the improvement comprising a draft tube, partially immersed vertically in the process fluid, the non-immersed end of the tube having at least one annular plate on the periphery thereof which overhangs the process fluid; and an impeller, located within the draft tube and propelling the process fluid up the draft tube and over the plate.

Reactor

An apparatus for commingling yarn. The apparatus has an inner body having a yarn passageway with a diameter of about 1/4 inch to 5/16 inch. There are orifices through which a high pressure fluid such as air pass to the yarn passageway. The orifices have a diameter of about 0.060 to 0.80 inches.

This invention is an improved process to remove volatiles from molten synthetic, preferably fiber forming relatively high viscosity polymers which comprises passing molten polymer through a rotary disk polymer processor at a temperature of between 260.degree. C. and 300.degree. C. at a rate of between about 10 and 75 pounds (4.5 and 34 kg) per hour per square foot (0.093 m.sup.2) of processor filming area, at a rotational rate of between about 5 and 75 rpm for the disks, and a processor having between 1 and 20 stages.

A muffler (10) for use in conjunction with an interfloor tube and aspirator (20) during the production of multifilament, synthetic yarn is provided. Audible noise which is emitted at the inlet end of the interfloor tube is reduced by up to 10 .DELTA.db(A) through the use of a perforated tube (11), restrictor plate (13) and sound absorbing material (16).

In the production of polyester fibers in a melt-spinning process, the transfer system between the melt source and the spinning position has a special importance due to the thermal degradation of the polyester. The present invention provides an improved transfer process which ensures relatively low thermal degradation of the molten polymer. The process is characterized by employment of two or more indexes whereby transfer elements and polymer flows in the transfer system may be correlated for minimum degradation of the polymer. The invention is of particular importance in a continuous process involving continuous polyester polycondensation coupled with continuous melt-spinning.

A method and apparatus for off-line testing and correcting the metering accuracy of a split multihole spinneret fed by a single metered stream by determining end to end variations in flow rate and by reworking a number of holes in the lower flow rate side of the split spinneret, calculated by multiplying the average test percent bias of the split spinneret by a predetermined constant, so as to bring end to end variations in flow rate to within a required accuracy.

An apparatus for producing a substantially nonturbulent stream of cooling gas for quenching a melt extruded filament, said apparatus comprising a new gas plenum chamber wherein gas diverting means turns and directs the cooling gas through the plenum chamber for passage through a diffuser, simultaneously reducing turbulence and smoothing the velocity profile of the cooling gas for passage through the diffuser. Another feature of the apparatus is its ability to supply different gas rates to the upper and lower zones of the quench cabinet.
