An imaging drum has an outer surface configured for receiving an ink image from a print head and transferring the image at a transfer nip. The imaging drum has a central channel extending through the drum along a central longitudinal axis. An inner drum surface faces the channel and includes surface alterations that increase or decrease at least one of surface emissivities and heat absorption to mitigate thermal influences on the imaging drum and control temperature variability along the imaging drum.

A filter plate has an interior cavity, at least one filter contained in the interior cavity, a first port on a first side of the plate, at least one second port on a second side of the plate, forming a flow path with the first port through the filter, wherein the second port is positioned higher on the plate than the first port. A print head has an ink reservoir having an ink supply port connected to an ink supply, and a filter plate attached to the reservoir and positioned between the ink supply port and the ink reservoir, the filter plate including an interior cavity, at least one filter contained in the interior cavity, a first filter port on a first side of the filter plate in contact with the ink supply port, and at least one second filter port on a second side of the filter plate facing the ink reservoir, wherein the second port is positioned higher on the filter plate than the first port.

A phase change inkjet printer including a heated phase change ink reservoir configured to reduce or prevent improper jetting of ink from a printhead. The reservoir includes a vent to atmosphere to provide substantially consistent and accurate jetting of the heated ink. A selective barrier, such as a filter, disposed adjacent to the vent substantially prevents ink from entering the vent while still enabling the vent to direct a pressure into the reservoir during printing and during purging.

A system for recycling waste phase change ink in a phase change ink imaging device includes a waste ink collector positioned within a phase change ink imaging device to collect waste phase change ink produced by a printhead in the phase change ink imaging device. A waste phase change ink conveyor is configured to convey melted waste phase change ink from the waste ink collector to an ink reservoir for the printhead.

An ink collecting system has been developed to direct ink purged from a printhead positioned above an ink collecting tray along a stepped flow path into the ink collecting tray. The stepped flow path enables the purged ink to flow from a faceplate on the jet stack, around a junction, onto a lower surface of the jet stack, and to a curved lower flange of a reservoir housing, which directs the ink away from the faceplate before the ink drops into the ink collecting tray for disposal or reuse.

An ink reclamation receptacle receives ink purged from an inkjet printing apparatus. Ink in the reclamation receptacle wets a porous membrane positioned in the reclamation receptacle, and flows into a flow channel. Negative pressure applied to a port that is placed in fluid communication with the flow channel withdraws ink from the flow channel for use in the inkjet printing apparatus, while ink wetting the pores in the membrane resists a flow of air into the flow channel.

A method for operating a printer having multiple printheads includes activating a heater that is operatively connected to a printhead that ejects ink having a single color in response to receiving a print job. The printer detects the presence of colors other than the single color in image data received in the print job, and activates heaters operatively coupled to printheads that eject ink drops that correspond to the detected colors.

An inkjet printing apparatus is provided with a one-way valve to enable a single conduit to supply ink to an ink reservoir and withdraw purged ink from a receptacle into the ink reservoir. A bi-directional pump is operated in both directions in an alternating manner to withdraw ink from the receptacle when supplying the ink reservoir with ink.

Method and system for ink delivery and purged ink recovery in an inkjet printer

An aperture plate for a print head of a printer can include a first layer having a first emissivity which is covered by a second layer having a second emissivity which is less than the first emissivity. In an embodiment, the second layer can be etched at nozzle locations to form openings in the second layer which have widths/areas greater than widths/areas of nozzles formed in the first layer. In another embodiment, the second layer can have a smaller thickness at the nozzle locations and a larger thickness away from the nozzle locations. Forming the openings in the second layer which are larger than the nozzles, or forming the second layer thinner at the nozzle locations prior to forming the nozzles, can provide a well-formed nozzle and an aperture plate having a low emissivity.

A flexible circuit substrate has an integrated circuit mounted on the substrate, a first set of traces arranged to connect between a first voltage source and a first set of connectors on the integrated circuit, a second set of traces arranged to connect between a second voltage source and a second set of connectors on the integrated circuit, and a gap in the flexible circuit substrate between the first and second set of traces, the gap of sufficient width to stop an electrical arc-tracking between the first set of traces and the second set of traces. The substrate may have a second gap between the first gap and other traces.

Reduction of arc-tracking in chip on flexible circuit substrates

A reservoir is provided for a printhead in an ink jet printing machine, the printhead having at least one printhead inlet at a rear face thereof for flow of ink from the reservoir into the printhead. The reservoir comprises a perimeter wall sealably mounted to the rear face of the printhead and defining a chamber in communication with the printhead inlet. The chamber is open at one face and the reservoir includes a resilient flexible membrane attached to the perimeter wall and covering the one face. An inlet is provided in communication with the chamber for passage of ink into the chamber. The resilient flexible membrane has an initial relaxed condition in a first state in which the reservoir is substantially full of ink, and a flexed condition in which the membrane is collapsed into the chamber.

A system controls application of heat with a melt plate to an ink stick in a solid ink imaging device. The system includes a melt plate, a heater configured to heat the melt plate to a temperature sufficient to melt solid ink, a feed channel configured to direct solid ink sticks towards the melt plate to enable a leading edge of a solid ink stick to be melted by the heated melt plate, and a controller configured to separate the heater and the leading edge of the ink stick by a distance that arrest melting of the ink stick.

An insulation container has an insulation material, a filter arranged to encase the insulation material, the filter of a material that prevents escape of the insulation material while allowing air to pass through, and a container arranged to encase the filter, the container being heat sealable. A printer has an ink supply, a print head arranged to receive ink from the ink supply and configured to receive electrical signals from a controller and to dispense ink in accordance with the electrical signals onto a print substrate, and an insulator to absorb heat from the print head. A method of manufacturing an insulator includes forming a filter container of a filter material, the filter material having openings small enough to prevent escape of the filter material and large enough to allow air to pass through, filling, at least partially, the filter container with an insulating material, sealing the filter container, inserting the filter container into a sealable container, applying a vacuum to the sealable container such that the vacuum is applied to the filter container as well, and sealing the sealable container.
