The present invention extends to methods, systems, and computer program products for cross-platform data visualizations using common descriptions. Embodiments of the invention provide mechanisms for simplifying software development and enhanced code reliability. A user interface, along with interactive and dynamic characteristics, can be described (programmatically and/or declaratively) independently of any specific device platform. User interface qualities can be described using a generic scene graph structure with attached behaviors. The generic scene graph can then be used to drive the user interface on any number of different computing platforms using platform specific (e.g., rendering, gesture recognition, etc.) sub-systems. Platform specific sub-systems can vary based on technologies that are used by the platform specific sub-systems. For example, rendering sub-systems can vary based on the technology used to render graphical data, such as, for example, Open GL, XAML, Direct X, Quartz, etc.

Cross-platform data visualizations using common descriptions

Embodiments render on a second data processing system, a result derived from a set of data by performing data processing across the first data processing system and a second data processing system. The amount of processing performed by the second data processing system can be dynamically adjusted. The first data processing system receives information indicating an amount of interface characteristics of the first data processing system as compared to interface characteristics of the second data processing system to be presented to a user. Data processing is dynamically allocated between the first data processing system and the second data processing system, based on an amount of interface characteristics of the first data processing system as compared to interface characteristics of the second data processing system to be presented to a user.

Dynamically adjusting brand and platform interface elements

A method includes acts for a method of rendering a result derived from a set of data by performing data processing across first and second data processing systems. The amount of processing performed by the second data processing system can be dynamically adjusted depending on business factors. The first data processing system receives information defining how the result will be rendered. The first data processing system receives information indicating at least one business constraints affecting at least one of the first data processing system or the second data processing system. The first data processing system determines data processing needed for providing the result. The first data processing system dynamically allocates the needed data processing between the first data processing system and the second data processing system, based on the business constraints affecting at least one of the first data processing system or the second data processing system.

A method includes acts for rendering, on a data processing system, a result derived from a set of data by performing data processing across a first data processing system and a second data processing system. The amount of processing performed by the second data processing system can be dynamically adjusted depending on factors affecting the second data processing system. The first data processing system receives information defining how the result will be rendered at the second data processing system. The first data processing system receives information indicating factors affecting the second data processing system. The first data processing system dynamically allocates the needed data processing between the first data processing system and the second data processing system, based on factors affecting the second data processing system.

Division of processing between systems based on external factors

The isolation of user-interactive components form the logical components of an exemplary computing application environment is provided. In an illustrative implementation, an exemplary computing application environment comprises one or more user interface (UI) elements that run on an exemplary user-interface processing thread and application logic that illustratively operatively runs asynchronously on at least one other processing thread. In an illustrative implementation an isolation boundary is provided between an exemplary user interface and the application logic of the exemplary computing application environment. In the illustrative implementation, the isolation boundary can comprise an asynchronous view contract comprising a channel between an exemplary view layer of an exemplary user interface (e.g., one or more user-interactive components) and application logic.

Implementing desired business logic functionality. The desired business logic functionality may include a number of individual functions. A number of computer implemented modules are selected. Each module is configured to perform at least a portion of one of the individual functions. Additionally, each module includes a computer implemented interface for connecting to other modules. The implemented modules are connected to create a composite module. The composite module includes functionality for implementing the individual functions. The composite module includes computer implemented interfaces for connecting to other modules, including a UI module. As such, the composite module is reusable in implementing more complex functionality by being selected as a computer implemented module and being connected to other computer implemented modules. The composite module is agnostic to how a UI module exposes functionality to a user.

UI behaviors

A multi-phase synchronization framework allows developers to develop smart client applications that can operate efficiently in offline and online modes. For example, a client application receives user input, and generates an object that includes the user input data, as well as some associated logic for one or more phases in the synchronization framework. The object can then be passed to the synchronization framework, which communicates a service request based on the object to a target application service only when the target application service is effectively online, generally as defined by the associated logic. Whether the target application service is effectively online can also be based on default settings. The synchronization framework handles state for the object, and communicates failure and/or success to the client application. As such, the functionality for treating failed or successful communication is handled generally by the synchronization framework, rather than necessarily the client application.

Framework for managing client application data in offline and online environments

Navigation connection points for separating navigation business logic from user interface elements. Computer executable instructions are used in a navigation framework for implementing navigation business logic separated from user interface elements. This allows the navigation business logic and user interface elements to be developed separately and later combined. A computer readable storage medium includes computer executable instructions configured to perform navigational tasks. The computer readable storage medium further includes a computer implemented interface operatively connected to the computer executable instruction configured to perform navigational tasks. The computer implemented interface is configured to connect to an external computer implemented user interface module. The computer implemented interface allows an external computer implemented user interface module to be selected from one of a number of external computer implemented user interface modules such that the navigation business logic is not limited to a single user interface implementation.

Optimizing pipeline handler execution. A method may be practiced in a computing environment including an execution pipeline. The method includes acts to optimize execution of handlers in the pipeline. The method includes receiving a payload object. Policy information about the payload object is referenced. The policy information includes at least one property value. Based on the policy information about the payload object, handlers are selected from among the pipeline to execute on the payload object. The policy information may be referenced by strategies. Handlers may be registered with the strategies to facilitate the strategies being used to select handlers.

Scalable and configurable execution pipeline of handlers having policy information for selectively acting on payload

The present invention extends to methods, systems, and computer program products for providing a context based work environment. In some embodiments, a computer system is configured to mine relationships to capture references relevant to a context. In other embodiments, a computer system adds a reference to a context. In yet other embodiments, a computer system performs a task when focus is shifted off of the task between performance of different portions of the task. Accordingly, embodiments of the present invention promote more efficient data manipulation at a computer system and can (potentially significantly) reduce the amount of work that has to be re-performed when a worker leaves and then subsequently resumes a task.
