A hard disk drive head slider housing a read-write transducer includes electrical pads for bonding with a suspension flexure, electrically conductive bonding studs each extending into the slider body from a corresponding bonding pad, electrical pads for testing where each is positioned proximate to and at a distance from a corresponding bonding pad, electrically conductive testing studs each extending into the slider body from a corresponding testing pad, and a conductive layer within the slider body for electrically connecting a bonding pad with a corresponding testing pad via respective bonding and testing studs. This arrangement accomplishes the effects of a commonly-employed anti-wetting overlay separating the testing pad from the bonding pad, without the added cost, capital expenditure, process and yield difficulties associated with the anti-wetting overlay.

Magnetic sensors using spin Hall effect and methods for fabricating same are provided. One such magnetic sensor includes a spin Hall layer including an electrically conductive, non-magnetic material, a magnetic free layer adjacent to the spin Hall layer, a pair of push terminals configured to enable an electrical current to pass through the magnetic free layer and the spin Hall layer in a direction that is perpendicular to a plane of the free and spin Hall layers, and a pair of sensing terminals configured to sense a voltage when the electrical current passes through the magnetic free layer and the spin Hall layer, where each of the push and sensing terminals is electrically isolated from the other terminals.

Disclosed herein is a magnetic storage device that comprises a suspension arm co-movably fixed to a carriage arm. The suspension arm comprises a slider attachment side and at least one first electrical contact pad on the slider attachment side. The suspension arm also comprises a slider co-movably fixed to the suspension arm. The slider comprises a suspension attachment side, a non-head side facing the suspension arm and intersecting the suspension attachment side at a first slider edge of the slider, a head side facing away from the suspension arm, and at least one electrical contact component on the suspension attachment side up to the first slider edge. At least one solder weldment is directly coupled to the at least one first electrical contact pad and the at least one electrical contact component. Additionally, a read-write head is coupled to the head side of the slider.

Embodiments described herein generally relate to resistive shunt design in a read sensor for providing accurate measurements from an electronic lapping guide (ELG). More specifically, embodiments described herein relate to a transducer resistor shunt structure for low cost probing. A bleed resistor network for a read sensor may comprise one or more first resistors arranged in parallel with one another and a second resistor arranged in series with the one or more first resistors. The resistor arrangement may require a small physical area and reduce or prevent ELG measurement errors.

A magnetic read sensor having a magnetic seed layer, a pinned layer structure formed over the magnetic seed layer, a non-magnetic barrier or spacer layer formed over the pinned layer structure and a magnetic free layer structure formed over the non-magnetic barrier or spacer layer. The pinned layer has a stripe height (measured from the media facing surface) that is greater than a stripe height of the magnetic free layer structure. In addition, the magnetic seed layer structure has a stripe height (also measured from the media facing surface) that is greater than the stripe height of the magnetic pinned layer structure and the magnetic free layer structure. The stripe height of the magnetic seed layer structure can be controlled independently of the stripe heights of the magnetic pinned layer structure and the magnetic free layer structure.

Embodiments described herein generally relate to connecting electronic lapping guides (ELGs) to a lapping controller to prevent the effects of current crowding while reducing connections to the ELGs in single pad lapping. Devices and systems can include a row of sliders including a magnetoresistive (MR) element, a plurality of high resistance ELGs connected to both the wafer and to at least one bonding pad and at least two peripheral grounding vias connected to the wafer. Methods and systems include a wafer comprising a plurality of sliders wherein each slider is connected to a lapping controller and the delivery of current to the ELGs is sequential to groups of sliders such that only one group of ELGs is being measured at any time.

Correcting current crowding in row bar and vias for single pad bonding

Embodiments described herein generally relate to connecting Electronic Lapping Guides (ELG) to a lapping controller to reduce resistance from current crowding while reducing connections to the ELG. A device and a system can include a wafer with peripheral grounding vias having a radius of at least 10 &#x3bc;m, a plurality of sliders with a magnetoresistive (MR) elements; a plurality of ELG electrically coupled to the lapping controller through a combination of the wafer and grounding pads and a bonding pad electrically coupled to the ELG. The ELG or the bonding pad can be positioned in the kerf or the device region of a row. If the ELG and the bonding pad are positioned in separate regions, a noble metal should be used to connect. Further, the number of grounding pads can be reduced by using grounding vias at specific intervals and specific sizes.

Wafer grounding design for single pad lapping

An air-bearing slider used in a magnetic recording disk drive has a surface that supports a magnetoresistive (MR) read head or sensor and an electrical lapping guide (ELG) adjacent to the MR sensor. The ELG is formed of a different material than the MR sensor so as to have both a high electrical resistivity and a substantially higher etch rate. When the ELG and MR sensor are etched simultaneously to form their respective back edges, the ELG will have a sharp well-defined non-tapered wall at the back edge. The ELG has a film thickness close to but generally thinner than that of the MR sensor, and a sheet resistance to generally match the resistance measurement capability of the lapping tool. The preferred material for the ELG is an alloy comprising silver (Ag) and one or more of Sn, Ge and zinc Zn.

A logic device is described. The logic device includes magnetic input/channel regions, magnetic sensor region(s), and sensor(s) coupled with the magnetic sensor region(s). Each magnetic input/channel region is magnetically biased in a first direction. The magnetic sensor region(s) are magnetically biased in a second direction different from the first direction such that domain wall(s) reside in the magnetic input/channel regions if the logic device is in a quiescent state. The sensor(s) output a signal based on a magnetic state of the magnetic sensor region(s). The input/channel regions and the magnetic sensor region(s) are configured such that the domain wall(s) may move into the magnetic sensor region(s) in response to a logic signal being provided to the magnetic input region(s). The magnetic input/channel region(s) include FeCoNiM1M2, with x+y+z+q1+q2=1, x, y, z, q1, q2 at least zero and M1 and M2 being nonmagnetic.

Method and system for providing spin transfer based logic devices

A method and system for providing a magnetic junction usable in a magnetic memory are described. The magnetic junction includes first and second pinned layers, first and second nonmagnetic spacer layers, and a free layer. The first pinned layer has a first pinned layer magnetic moment and is nonmagnetic layer-free. The first nonmagnetic spacer layer resides between the first pinned and free layers. The free layer resides between the first and second nonmagnetic spacer layers. The second pinned layer has a second pinned layer magnetic moment and is nonmagnetic layer-free. The second nonmagnetic spacer layer resides between the free and second pinned layers. The first and second pinned layer magnetic moments are antiferromagnetically coupled and self-pinned. The magnetic junction is configured to allow the free layer to be switched between stable magnetic states when a write current is passed through the magnetic junction.

Method and system for providing dual magnetic tunneling junctions usable in spin transfer torque magnetic memories

A method and system for providing a magnetic junction usable in a magnetic memory are described. The magnetic junction includes first and second pinned layers, first and second nonmagnetic spacer layers, and a free layer. The pinned layers are nonmagnetic layer-free and self-pinned. In some aspects, the magnetic junction is configured to allow the free and second pinned layers to be switched between stable magnetic states when write currents are passed therethrough. The magnetic junction has greater than two stable states. In other aspects, the magnetic junction includes at least third and fourth spacer layers, a second free layer therebetween, and a third pinned layer having a pinned layer magnetic moment, being nonmagnetic layer-free, and being coupled to the second pinned layer. The magnetic junction is configured to allow the free layers to be switched between stable magnetic states when write currents are passed therethrough.

In one embodiment and method of the present invention, a coil of a write head is created by forming a Ppedestal layer and a back gap layer and further forming a coil pattern consistent with the coil to be formed and insulator spacers dispersed in the coil pattern, using a non-damascene process, thereafter the coil is formed by plating using a damascene process.

A method and system for providing a logic device are described. The logic device includes a plurality of magnetic input/channel regions, at least one magnetic sensor region, and at least one sensor coupled with the at least one magnetic sensor region. Each of the magnetic input/channel regions is magnetically biased in a first direction. The magnetic sensor region(s) are magnetically biased in a second direction different from the first direction such that at least one domain wall resides in the magnetic input/channel regions if the logic device is in a quiescent state. The sensor(s) output a signal based on a magnetic state of the magnetic sensor region(s). The input/channel regions and the magnetic sensor region(s) are configured such that the domain wall(s) may move into the magnetic sensor region(s) in response to a logic signal being provided to at least a portion of the magnetic input regions.

A disk drive head slider for a magnetic disk drive is provided. The head slider includes a tunnel magnetic resistance device for reading data on a magnetic disk and a dedicated noncorrosive smear detector for measuring resistance wherein the resistance corresponds to a level of smear associated with the head slider.
