A fuel injector having an arrangement to stabilize the temperature of its components within an engine cylinder in a direct injection application. The fuel injector includes a body, an armature, a needle, a swirl generator, and a seat. The body has an inlet portion, an outlet portion, a body passage, extending from the inlet portion to the outlet portion along a longitudinal axis of the fuel injector. The armature is located proximate the inlet portion of the body, and is operatively connected to the needle. The needle is provided with a substantially uniform cross-sectional area, and the body is selected to surround the needle and form a body passage that has an average cross-sectional area less than two times the substantially uniform cross-sectional area of the needle. In particular, the body includes a neck, which is preferably a cylindrical annulus, that has an inner diameter that is no more than 50% greater than a diameter of a preferred cylindrical needle, and an outer diameter that is no less than 100% greater than the inner diameter. The swirl generator is located proximate the needle and the seat. The needle engages the seat, which is disposed at the outlet portion of the body. The seat, preferably, includes a first surface exposed to the body passage and a second surface exposed to an exterior of the fuel injector. The first surface is spaced from the second surface a defined distance along the longitudinal axis. Alternatively, the first surface has at least one cut-out configuration, which is preferably, at least one volume that defines at least one wall that extends from the first surface for a fraction of the defined distance into an interior of the seat.

Fuel injector temperature stabilizing arrangement and method

A fuel injector comprises a tube assembly, a stem assembly, and a plurality of sets of piezoelectric elements. The tube assembly includes a seat defining an opening through which fuel enters an internal combustion engine. The stem assembly includes a cap and a stem that are relatively movable with respect to one another. A gap is located between the stem and cap when the stem contiguously engages the seat such that fuel flow through the opening is prevented. A first set of piezoelectric elements moves the cap in response to a first electric field, and a second set of piezoelectric elements moves the first set of piezoelectric elements in response to a second electric field. A sensor measuring the gap compensates the second electric field for physical changes in at least one of the tube and stem assemblies.

Electronic compensator for a piezoelectric actuator

A metering assembly for a fuel injector having multiple orifice plates is disclosed. The metering assembly includes a valve body, a seat, a needle and a multi-layer orifice plate assembly. The valve body has an inlet, an outlet and a longitudinal axis extending therethrough. The seat is disposed proximate the outlet and includes a passage having a sealing surface and an orifice. The needle is reciprocally located within the housing along the longitudinal axis between a first position wherein the needle is displaced from the seat, allowing fuel flow past the needle, and a second position wherein the needle is biased against the seat, precluding fuel flow past the needle. The multi-layer orifice plate assembly is located at the housing outlet and includes a first orifice plate having a plurality of first openings extending therethrough. The orifice plate assembly further includes a second orifice plate having a plurality of second openings extending therethrough. The plurality of first openings and the plurality of second openings are fluidly connected by at least one channel. A method of accelerating fuel through the injector is also disclosed.

Fuel injection valve with multiple nozzle plates

The present invention provides a valve assembly including a housing, an armature, an armature bias spring, a needle, and a seat. The valve assembly housing has an inlet, an outlet, and an axially extending passageway from the inlet to the outlet along a longitudinal axis. The armature is disposed within the passageway. The armature has an armature passage including a first portion and a second portion. The first portion has a first cross-sectional area. The second portion has a second cross-sectional area. The first cross-sectional area of the first portion is greater than the second cross-sectional area of the second portion. The armature bias spring is disposed within the first portion of the armature passage. The needle is disposed within the second portion of the armature passage. The seat is located proximate the outlet. The flow restrictor is disposed between the first portion and the second portion of the armature passage of the armature. The flow restrictor includes an orifice having a third cross-sectional area that is less than the first cross-sectional area. The present invention also provides a method of generating flow from a valve assembly without after-flow through the valve assembly when the valve assembly is commanded to terminate a flow cycle. The method is achieved by sizing the first portion of the armature passage with a first volume and the second portion of the armature passage with a second volume, which is less than the first volume; providing a first vent aperture that communicates the first volume with a portion of the armature passageway; providing a second vent aperture that communicates the second volume with a portion of the armature passageway; and locating a flow restrictor between the first volume and the second volume.

A fuel injector with a valve body having an inlet, an outlet, and an axially extending fuel passageway from the inlet to the outlet. An armature located proximate the inlet of the valve body. A needle valve operatively connected to the armature. A valve seat proximate the outlet of the valve body. A swirl generator disk located proximate the valve seat. The swirl generator disk having at least one slot extending tangentially from a central aperture. A flat guide disk having a first surface, a second surface adjacent the flat swirl generator disk, a guide aperture, and at least one fuel passage having a wall extending between the first surface and the second surface. The wall includes an inlet, an outlet, and a transition region between the inlet and the outlet that defines a cross-sectional area of the at least one passage. The transition region is provided by a surface of the wall. The surface of the wall is configured to gradually change the direction of fuel flowing from the fuel passageway of a valve body to the flat swirl generator disk so that sharp corners in the fuel flow path are minimized.

Pressure swirl generator for a fuel injector

A high pressure fuel injector has a swirl generator with a metering disk upstream of the valve seat. The disks function to redirect the axially flowing fuel through the injector into a tangential fuel flow. As the fuel moves past the needle valve and the valve seat, the narrow cross section imparts a higher velocity to the fuel to atomize the fuel. As the fuel leaves the swirl generator and is ejected from the injector, the fuel forms a hollow conical sheet containing atomized fuel.

A fuel injector has a swirl plate about a valve assembly, including a valve seat with an orifice and a valve pin. When the valve is opened, the fuel is swirled by the swirl plate for passage through the orifice. The orifice has a portion which is angled relative to the axis of the injector to provide a conical swirling spray pattern having a conical spray axis angularly related to the axis of the injector. In another form, the orifice is on-axis with the injector and receives a bent tube having an upstream on-axis portion and a downstream angled portion to direct the swirling conical spray at an included obtuse angle relative to the axis of the injector.

A method and fuel injector for precision setting of valve lift, using a valve body shell (42) telescoped over the valve body (60), the shell (42) having a nonmagnetic extension welded to the valve body shell (42) and to the end of an inlet tube (16) providing a solenoid pole piece, with the valve body (60) and shell (42) adjusted to set the valve lift and thereafter welded together. Interference fit portions stabilize the adjusted position of the members preparatory to welding, and displaced material in a locking groove (102) creates a mechanical interlock between the valve body (60) and shell (42) to stabilize the members in their adjusted positions after welding so that the set lift is minimally affected by weld shrinkage. An external radial groove 18 allows radial bending as the weld cools to minimize axial shift of the parts and thus the effect on the set valve lift.

Method and fuel injector enabling precision setting of valve lift

A compact injector armature valve assembly for a fuel injector allowing the O-ring to O-ring spacing to be reduced. The armature valve assembly is a cylindrical hollow magnetic piece, with a narrow necked down portion to act as the receiving end for a ball, which is directly attached to the necked down portion. The attachment of the necked down portion by means of crimping or chemical bonding above the mid-point of the ball allows the strengths of a pivot style guidance scheme to be used.

Compact injector armature valve assembly

An engine fuel injection system includes a conventional fuel rail with a top feed fuel injector connected thereto. The overall length of the injector is able to be shortened by the application of compact fuel inlet filter mountings in which a well (deep cup) shaped filter element is positioned to overlap one or both of (1) an adjusting tube within the injector body and (2) a space between the end of the injector fuel inlet tube and the interior of the associated fuel rail. The filter may be fixed within the injector to the adjusting tube or the inlet tube or may be fixed externally of the injector to the fuel rail. Various exemplary embodiments are shown and described.

Fuel injection systems with compact filter mountings

A low cost method for manufacturing and aligning the upper and lower guide members in a fuel injector reduces manufacturing cost and improves durability. The method teaches the use of an alignment tool to axially align both guide members before the guide members are rigidly secured to the valve body of the injector. The dimensional tolerances on the guide members are loose with the sole exception of the alignment aperture which is closely held.

A bottom feed engine fuel injector is provided with a valve spring calibration adjuster such as an adjusting tube, which permits fuel flow from the top of the injector during manufacturing calibration and run in. The upper end of the injector is capped in the last manufacturing step after calibration to prevent fuel passage through this opening in normal engine use where bottom fuel feed is used in conventional fashion. Several exemplary adjusters and top feed closing embodiments are illustrated and described. The modified injector structure and manufacturing process reduces costs by allowing both top and bottom feed injectors to be assembled and calibrated on the same manufacturing equipment.

The armature has a tubular wall bounding a main axial through-hole. The upper axial end has a larger outside diameter than does the lower axial end. A portion of the tubular wall lying between these upper and lower ends has a frustoconical exterior surface. A single through-hole extends through the tubular wall at this frustoconical surface to non-perpendicularly intersect the main axial through-hole. The upper end of a needle valve is inserted into the lower axial end of the main through-hole, and the two parts are joined there by welding and/or crimping. The inserted end of the needle valve does not obstruct the single through-hole extending through the tubular wall so that fuel entering the armature via the open upper end of the main through-hole will change direction to pass out of the armature through the single through-hole in the tubular wall.
