Systems and methods for detection of a signal from droplets of an emulsion. An exemplary system may comprise a fluid transporter having a tube with an open end for aspirating droplets, a singulator to arrange the droplets in single file and to space the single-file droplets from one another, and a detection channel in optical communication with a detector configured to detect a signal from droplets. In some embodiments, the singulator may have a channel junction at which a stream of droplets in single file is combined with a stream of spacing fluid, and a tapered spacing channel extending downstream from the channel junction toward the detection channel. In some embodiments, the fluid transporter may suck droplet-containing fluid and spacing fluid through the detection channel from respective sources. In some embodiments, droplets may be subjected to a disaggregation routine before they are passed through the detection channel.

The disclosure features methods and systems that include directing an ion beam to a region of a sample to liberate charged particles from the region of the sample, where the directed ion beam is pulsed at a first repetition rate, deflecting a first subset of the liberated charged particles from a first path to a second path different from the first path in response to a gate signal synchronized with the repetition rate of the pulsed ion beam, and detecting the first subset of the liberated charged particles in a time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectrometer to determine information about the sample, where the gate signal sets a common reference time for the TOF mass spectrometer for the first subset of charged particles liberated by each pulse of the ion beam.

The present invention relates to nanostructured materials (including nanowires) for use in batteries. Exemplary materials include carbon-comprising, Si-based nanostructures, nanostructured materials disposed on carbon-based substrates, and nanostructures comprising nanoscale scaffolds. Systems and methods for detecting and processing signals from particles. In an exemplary method, particles may be passed through a zone of a channel, while the zone is irradiated with light. Interaction of the light with the particles may deflect light and induce photoluminescence. A deflection signal and a photoluminescence signal may be detected from the zone. Particle waveforms may be identified in the deflection signal. At least a subset of the particle waveforms may be double-peak waveforms including a pair of peaks corresponding to a particle entering and exiting the zone. Amplitudes may be obtained from the photoluminescence signal. The amplitudes may correspond to respective particles and their particle waveforms, and at least a subset of the amplitudes may correspond to the double-peak waveforms. Individual particles may be assigned as positive or as negative for an analyte based on the corresponding amplitudes.

Methods, systems, and apparatuses for nanowire deposition are provided. A deposition system includes an enclosed flow channel, an inlet port, and an electrical signal source. The inlet port provides a suspension that includes nanowires into the channel. The electrical signal source is coupled to an electrode pair in the channel to generate an electric field to associate at least one nanowire from the suspension with the electrode pair. The deposition system may include various further features, including being configured to receive multiple solution types, having various electrode geometries, having a rotatable flow channel, having additional electrical conductors, and further aspects.
