A message delivery network may receive a message from a sending message service provider. The message delivery network may identify an end user carrier servicing the end user device for the message. The message delivery network may retrieve a pre-determined rank ordered list of message routes from the message delivery network to the end user carrier. The message delivery network may determine whether each message route is currently unavailable or demonstrating poor deliverability. The message delivery network may de-prioritize the message routes that are demonstrating poor deliverability. The message delivery network may update the rank ordered list of message routes based on the de-prioritized message routes. The message delivery network may attach the updated rank ordered list of message routes to the message. The message delivery network may forward the message to a gateway within the message delivery network. The gateway may deliver the message using the highest ranked message route. Other embodiments are described herein.

Techniques for routing messages in a communications network

A personalized content overlay is generated and sent for display to a subscriber. The content overlay may be generated in response to a request by the subscriber, such as a request to watch a program. The content overlay can include personalized information tailored to the subscriber based on subscriber information. The content overlay can also include information obtained from a third party, such as an advertiser, that has a preexisting relationship with the subscriber. The content overlay can include one or more triggers that, when activated by the subscriber, enable interactivity between the subscriber and a third party.

Content overlays in on-demand streaming applications

The present invention allows a network policy server or other centralized entity to provide arbitration for selecting media capabilities to use in a communication session between communication clients. In operation, the network policy server will directly or indirectly receive a first message in association with an attempt to establish a communication session from a first communication client. The first message will include the available media capabilities of the first communication client. The network policy server will apply appropriate policies for the first communication client, the network in general, or a combination thereof to select one or more of the first media capabilities to determine a second set of media capabilities, which are provided in response to the first message. This reduced set of media capabilities will ultimately be used to establish the communication session with the first communication client.

The present invention provides a technique for providing a forced hold service such as is used for an emergency services call, which is supported at least in part over a packet network. The forced hold service acts to effectively hold a connection for the call with a called party, even when the caller takes an action that would normally end a call, such as going on hook, pressing end, or the like. When the caller takes an action that would normally end the call, the forced hold service allows the caller to automatically reconnect to the emergency services provider over the held connection upon going offhook, pressing send, or the like. Alternatively, the emergency services provider can effectively re-engage the call wherein the caller is reconnected over the held connection upon going offhook, pressing send, or the like.

Forced hold call handling in a VoP environment

The present invention allows Internet Protocol television (IPTV) services to be provided to different types of subscriber devices over different types of networks via a multimedia subsystem, such as an IP multimedia subsystem. A given subscriber may have one subscription supporting IPTV services to different types of subscriber devices. Each of the subscriber devices may register with a given IPTV application server, which will interact with the various subscriber devices using a common session control protocol, such as the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP). The IPTV sessions may support delivery of various types of streaming content, such as audio or video content, for broadcast or on-demand services. Different IPTV sessions are used to support broadcast and on-demand services. However, within a given broadcast or on-demand IPTV session, channels may be changed or the streaming media may be controlled within the respective IPTV sessions.

Multimedia subsystem control for internet protocol based television services

A method for processing calls in a packet network using peer call servers includes receiving a setup message from a first gateway in the packet network. The setup message includes a first address for a called endpoint. The call server that receives the setup message translates the message into a call server ID and an endpoint ID specifying the remote call server corresponding to the called party. The call server sends the call server ID and the endpoint ID to the remote call server. The remote call server obtains a call signaling transport address to the called end user based in the endpoint ID.

Methods and systems for processing calls in a packet network using peer call servers

One embodiment of the present invention facilitates efficient metering in a packet network environment by providing a single metering message, which contains sufficient information to provide the complete call tariff model for a particular call. The media gateway receiving the message can analyze the information provided in the message to determine how to provide metering pulses for all phases of the call, as well as any one-time charges, such as setup and add-on charges. Another embodiment of the invention provides a way for handling fractional pulse counts in an efficient manner. Yet another embodiment facilitates the handling of situations where charge intervals do not divide evenly into the phase duration of the phase associated with the call. In still another embodiment, the amount of information necessary to deliver the parameters of the call tariff model is minimized to reduce the overhead necessary for facilitating the metering process.

A method and an apparatus for interworking between internet protocol (IP) telephony protocols includes a call server. The call server includes a first protocol agent for communicating with a first protocol device according to a first protocol. A second protocol agent communicates with a second protocol device according to a second protocol. An interworking agent provides functions usable by the first and second protocol agents to communicate with each other according to a third protocol. The third protocol is a superset of functions provided by the first and second protocols.

Method and apparatus for interworking between internet protocol (IP) telephony protocols

An apparatus for providing a calling party with options for call termination treatments. The apparatus allows the called party to provide options which are presented to the calling party for a treatment when an attempted communications session is not successfully completed, and it provides the calling party with the selected treatment. Various types of treatments include receiving a recorded message, transferring to a voice mail system, transferring to a pager, or initiating another communications session.
