In an example embodiment, an apparatus, comprising a first wireless transceiver, a first directional antenna coupled to the first wireless transceiver, a second wireless transceiver, a second directional antenna coupled to the second wireless transceiver, and control logic coupled to the first wireless transceiver and the second wireless transceiver. The first wireless transceiver and second wireless transceiver can concurrently receive wireless signals that are spatially separated. The first wireless transceiver asserts a signal while communicating with another wireless device. The control logic is configured to prevent the second wireless transceiver from transmitting while the first wireless transceiver is asserting the signal.

A method for controlling cell size associated with an access point that has a receive sensitivity and an output power. The method includes changing a start of packet threshold and/or a clear channel assessment threshold to vary the cell size of the access point.

High density WLAN system

An adaptive bias control scheme for an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex (&ldquo;OFDM&rdquo;) transmitter. The transmitter chain is comprised of class A amplifiers. The amplifiers in the transmit chain are backed off from P1dB to ensure linear amplification of the signal. Amplifier back off is defined as (Amplifier P1dB) minus (Average Signal Power). Since the efficiency of the amplifier decreases in direct proportion, to the back off, it is desirable to minimize back off while maintaining linearity. The back off is dependent on the peak to average power ratio (&ldquo;PAPR&rdquo;) of the OFDM waveform. The PAPR is measured on a symbol by symbol basis and the amplifier P1dB is adjusted in proportion to the PAPR of the symbol, maintaining a P1dB sufficient to provide the required back off dictated by the maximum PAPR of the OFDM waveform, but can be lowered for symbols with PAPR below the maximum. The average operating point of the amplifiers is reduced by the adaptive bias control on a symbol-by-symbol basis.

Dynamic RF amplifier bias control for digital wireless communications devices

A method for communicating a packet of digital information including at least a preamble with a synchronization pattern, and a data field. The method includes the steps of including at least a plurality of test words at different respective locations in the data field; transmitting the packet as a whole including the test words from a transmitting device to a receiving device; receiving the packet with the receiving device; evaluating each of the plurality of test words in the received packet based on a comparison with a predefined criteria; and analyzing data reception properties associated with receiving the packet based on the evaluating step.

A cellular communication device for a cellular communication network which includes a radio-frequency (RF) transmitter for transmitting an RF signal at an output power level to one or more other devices in the cellular communication network; an RF receiver for receiving an RF signal from one or more other devices in the cellular communication network; and a gain control circuit for sampling the output power level to obtain a sampled output power level signal, digitizing the sampled output power level signal, and adjusting a gain of the RF transmitter based on the digitized sampled output power level signal in order that the output power level of the RF transmitter approaches a predefined output power level. The gain may also be adjusted in response to the Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) in order to conserve battery power.

Cellular communication devices with automated power level adjust

The present invention relates to a peripheral apparatus which enables users to communicate with a mobile device via radio as well as optical transmission substantially simultaneously. The peripheral apparatus includes a radio card which includes circuitry for conducting RF communication; and an antenna apparatus that is selectively detachable from the radio card, the antenna apparatus includes an optical device for conducting optical communications. When the antenna apparatus is attached to the radio card, the radio card is capable of radio and optical communications. The peripheral apparatus is particularly useful in that an available com port does not have to be solely dedicated for optical communications. Furthermore, the peripheral apparatus avoids the problems associated with employing external wires to connect an optical transceiver to the mobile device. As a result, the present invention affords a user the benefit of simply attaching the peripheral apparatus to effect a mobile device that is capable of communicating via RF and optics substantially simultaneously.
