A process for forming cement clinker using mill scale that may have hydrocarbons associated therewith. Normal feedstock material is preheated and then transferred to a combustion area. The mill scale is also transferred to the combustion area where, during the process of burning a material, the unwanted hydrocarbons are volatilized and converted to harmless gaseous products (by combustion) that can be passed to the atmosphere. The combustion area may be a precalciner or may be the feed end of the rotary kiln if the rotary kiln has an adequate temperature profile. The remaining mill scale and feedstock material are thoroughly mixed and blended and the mill scale is diffused and combined with the feedstock material as the mill scale and the feedstock material move from the feed end toward the heat-source end of the rotary kiln to form cement clinker.

Process for using mill scale in cement clinker production

The T-slot milling cutter disclosed employs an indexable insert having two alternative edge surfaces which serve alternatively as the rake face and rear abutting face of the insert which transfers the cutting force to the rear wall of the insert pocket of the cutter. The alternative edge surfaces comprise three facets, once central to the surface and the other two receding from the central facet at equal angles thereto. They serve primarily to wedge the insert into mating angular surfaces in the rear wall of the insert pocket to secure the insert against dislodgement when held in the pocket by the customary attaching screw and, by their obliquity to the cutting direction, improve the cutting action when serving as the rake face.

An apparatus for the removal of higher and lower volatility organic contaminants from media such as soil including an externally heated screw conveyor having an inlet, an outlet and one or more solid core flights, means for collecting and delivering media contaminated with higher and lower volatility organic contaminants to the screw conveyor inlet, at least one infrared radiation source external to the screw conveyor adapted to heat the media in the screw conveyor to a temperature above which at least one of the contaminants volatilize, and means for venting volatilized contaminants from the screw conveyor. A continuous process for removing higher and lower volatility organic contaminants from media such as soil including the steps of providing a source of contaminated media, agitating, manipulating and transporting the contaminated media by use of at least one screw conveyor having one or more solid core flights, heating simultaneously the contaminated media with a quantity of infrared radiation sufficient to volatilize at least one of the organic contaminants as the contaminated media is agitated, manipulated and transported by the at least one solid core screw conveyor, so that the organic contaminants are volatilized and the media is decontaminated.
