A composition including at least one solvent for cured product and at least one gelling or solidifying agent. The invention also provides a composition described above which is in the form of a soft solid, for example, in the form of a stick. A pack is also provided, comprising (i) a shaped mass of a composition, which includes at least one solvent for a cured product and at least one gelling or solidifying agent and a container ( ) for the composition. An anaerobic liquid acrylate sealant composition contains short portions of one or more types of fibre, particularly aramid fibre pulp, as a filler. A particulate filler such as fumed silica and/or micronized polyethylene may also be present. The composition suitably is based on a high proportion of monofunctional acrylate ester monomer, and a polyacrylate plasticiser. The composition is used for sealing joints in pipework where it is desired to seal the joint almost immediately but to allow adjustment of the joint for at least 24 hours.

Cyanoacrylate adhesive compositions which employ calixarene compounds as accelerators give substantially reduced fixture and cure times on de-activating substrates such as wood. The calixarene compounds are preferably employed at levels of about 0.1-1% by weight of the composition. The calixarene compounds particularly useful in this invention may be represented by the formula: ##STR1## where R.sup.1 is alkyl, alkoxy, substituted alkyl or substituted alkoxy; R.sup.2 is H or alkyl; and n=4, 6, or 8.

Bonding method utilizing cyanoacrylate adhesive having calixarene

Cyanoacrylate adhesive compositions which employ calixarene compounds as additives give substantially reduced fixture and cure times on de-activating substrates such as wood. The calixarene compounds are preferably employed at levels of about 0.1-1% by weight of the composition. The calixarene compounds particularly useful in this invention may be represented by the formula: ##STR1## where R.sup.1 is alkyl, alkoxy, substituted alkyl or substituted alkoxy; R.sup.2 is H or alkyl; and n=4, 6, or 8. The compositions are further characterized by a thickener component, which may suitably be selected from various polymers such as poly(methyl methacrylate), methacrylate type copolymers, acrylic rubbers, polyvinyl acetate and poly(.alpha.-cyanoacrylate) or silicas treated with polydialkylsiloxanes or trialkylsilanes.

Instant adhesive composition utilizing calixarene accelerators

An anaerobic adhesive composition activatable by ultraviolet or visible radiation is disclosed which forms strong bonds with lapped surfaces and which is comprised of (a) an anaerobically polymerizable acrylate ester monomer, (b) a compound which decomposes upon exposure to ultraviolet or visible light radiation to release a strong acid, (c) a peroxy free radical initiator capable of initiating the polymerization of the monomer upon substantial exclusion of oxygen and (d) an activator of anaerobic polymerization which, in the presence of a strong acid, reacts with the peroxide initiator to produce free radicals to catalyze the anaerobic polymerization of the monomer.

Radiation-activatable anaerobic adhesive composition

An improved two-part adhesive composition comprising as a first part monomer-in-polymer polymerizable solution and a second part, an activator enriched in its N-phenyl-3,5-diethyl-2-propyl-1,2-dihydropyridine content. The content is enriched to a concentration of at least about 70% of the second part.

Curable acrylate ester compositions having as an accelerator for the polymerization a hydrazine derivative of the formula R.sup.1 --HN--NH--CO--R.sup.2 and as a co-accelerator, an acid having a pK.sub.a of less than about 6. The compositions may optionally be formulated as two-part compositions with the non-ester-containing part being applied as a primer. Typical of the monomers are the polyalkylene glycol dimethacrylates and the so-called urethane acrylates. Polymerization is preferably initiated by a peroxy compound such as cumene hydroperoxide, such a composition having anaerobic curing characteristics.
