A method for the transfer of a bodily fluid sample (such as a whole blood sample) during the determination of an analyte (e.g., glucose) in the bodily fluid sample includes applying the bodily fluid sample to a sample collection reservoir of an analytical test strip (for example, an electrochemical-based analytical test strip). During such application, the sample collection reservoir is isolated from fluid communication with a determination chamber of the analytical test strip. The analytical test strip is subsequently inserted into a test meter such that the sample collection reservoir is placed into fluid communication with the determination chamber and such that at least a portion of the bodily fluid sample is consequentially transferred from the sample collection reservoir to the determination chamber. The method further includes determining the analyte in the bodily fluid sample transferred to the determination chamber.

A hand-held test meter and analytical test strip cartridge assembly combination includes a hand-held test meter with a test meter housing and an extractor with a test strip engagement feature, while the analytical test strip cartridge assembly includes a desiccant vial and an analytical test strip cartridge with a cartridge housing, a test strip presentation mechanism disposed within the cartridge housing, and a plurality of analytical test strips (each with at least one extractor engagement feature) disposed in the cartridge housing. The test meter housing is configured for operative engagement with the cartridge housing and the test strip presentation mechanism is configured to present a single analytical test strip from the plurality of analytical test strips for engagement with the extractor. Moreover, the analytical test strip cartridge is configured for operative disposition in the desiccant vial.

Described and illustrated herein are exemplary methods of operating an analyte measurement system having a meter and a test strip. Such methods may be exemplarily achieved by determining a first glucose concentration by measuring a first reflectance at about a first wavelength at a testing surface of the pad; measuring a second reflectance at about a second wavelength; formulating at least one equation to correct the first glucose concentration for temperature or hematocrit effects using the second reflectance at about the second wavelength; determining a second glucose concentration using the first glucose concentration, the second reflectance at about a second wavelength; and displaying the second glucose concentration that is corrected for temperature and hematocrit effects.

Suitability may also be determined based on the type of sample obtainable from the site, where the order of the above-described steps may be altered. The subject devices include at least one site flow characterization element for determining the flow characteristics of a potential physiological sampling site and/or at least one sample type characterization element for determining whether the vasculature is arterial, venous or neither, i.e., an interstitial fluid sampling site. The subject methods and devices are particularly suited for use in the detection of physiological sampling sites in the fingers, arms, legs, earlobes, heels, feet, nose and toes. Devices for physiological fluid sampling and methods of using the same

Electrochemical test strip cards that can be singulated to produce electrochemical test strips are provided. The electrochemical test cards are made up of two or more electrochemical test strip precursors, where each precursor is characterized by the presence of a dry reagent housing reaction chamber bounded by opposing electrodes. In gaseous communication with each reaction chamber of the card is an integrated desiccant. Also provided are methods of using the subject electrochemical test strips cards, as well as kits that include the same. The subject test strips and cards find use in the detection/concentration determination of a number of different analytes, including glucose.

Test strips for determining the concentration of at least one analyte, e.g., glucose, in a physiological sample and methods for their manufacture and use and are provided. The subject test strips include a transfer element for facilitating the transfer of sample to a reaction area of the test strip. In certain embodiments, the transfer element, typically porous, has a first area and a second area, and in certain embodiments the two areas have different thicknesses. In other embodiments, the transfer element is non-porous and is configured to transfer sample by wicking it between the transfer element and the reaction area of the test strip. In the subject methods, the transport element facilitates transfers of a sample to a reaction area of the test strip. The subject test strips and methods find use in a variety of different applications, particularly in the determination of glucose concentrations.

A dry phase reagent test strip for measuring the concentration of an analyte in a biological fluid includes a colored indicator whose hue indicates a calibration of the strip. Preferably, the test strip measures the concentration of glucose in whole blood.

A reagent strip is provided for measuring the concentration of an analyte in a liquid test sample, such as glucose or cholesterol in whole blood. The reagent strip includes a testing pad containing a color-forming reagent system specific to the analyte. The testing pad is disposed so that a side with relatively small pores defines a testing surface and an opposite side with relatively larger pores defines a sample-receiving surface. A porous sample transport medium is attached to the sample-receiving surface. A change in coloration caused by the color-forming reagent system at the testing surface is quantitatively related to the concentration of the analyte in the liquid test sample. The reagent strip may optionally include a rigid support member which facilitates evaluation of the change in coloration by mechanical viewing means. Also provided is a method for determining the concentration of an analyte in a liquid test sample.

A test strip is provided for having liquid applied thereto and for determining the presence or quantity of an analyte in such liquid. Specifically, the test strip comprises a reaction zone which varies in reflectance as a function of the quantity of analtye present in the applied liquid. The strip is to be inserted into an optical reading apparatus. A standard zone is positioned on the strip so as to lead the reaction zone as the strip is inserted into the reading apparatus. The apparatus may then be provided with optical means for sequentially determining the reflectance value of the standard zone as the strip is being inserted into its fully inserted position in the apparatus and the reflectance value of the reaction zone after the strip has been inserted. The apparatus is further provided with means for calculating the presence and/or quantity of analyte in question as a function of the standard zone reflectance and the reaction zone reflectance.
