A battery having an electrode assembly located in a housing that efficiently utilizes the space available in many implantable medical devices is disclosed. The battery housing provides a cover and a shallow case a preferably planar, major bottom portion, an open top to receive the cover opposing the bottom portion, and a plurality of sides being radiused at intersections with each other and with the bottom to allow for the close abutting of other components located within the implantable device while also providing for efficient location of the battery within an arcuate edge of the device. The cover and the shallow case being substantially hermetically sealed by a laser weld technique and an insulator member disposed within the case to provide a barrier to incident laser radiation so that during welding radiation does not impinge upon radiation sensitive component(s) disposed within the case.

An electrochemical cell for use in an implantable medical device is presented. The electrochemical cell includes a cover having a first surface and a second surface separated by an outer edge. The electrochemical cell also includes a case having a planar bottom, a side extending upwardly from the planar bottom, and an open top for receiving the cover.

The cover () is formed of a first material and has an outer surface () and an inner surface () defining a thickness thereof. The cover () also has a fluid fill hole () formed therein. The fluid fill hole () has an outer diameter () at the outer surface and a smaller inner diameter () at the inner surface. A hermetic seal () is formed within the fluid fill hole () of a second material that is softer than the first material and that is deformed to assume the approximate shape of the fluid fill hole ().

An electrochemical cell, comprising: an encasement including a case having a bottom and a sidewall terminating at an open top and a cover disposed over the case open top and hermetically sealed to the case, the encasement defining an interior space for containing cell components; and an access port defining at least one lumen extending through any of the case bottom, the case sidewall or the cover for receiving a liquid electrolyte, the access port being sealed closed after receiving the liquid electrolyte using a fusion welding method in the presence of the electrolyte.

A capacitor structure comprises a shallow drawn encasement having first and second major sides and a peripheral wall coupled to the first and second sides. A cathode is disposed within the encasement proximate the first and second major sides, the cathode having a cathode lead. A central anode a having an anode lead is disposed within the encasement, and a bipolar, insulative feedthrough extends through the encasement through which electrical coupling may be made to the anode lead and the cathode lead.

A capacitor structure comprises a shallow drawn case having a first major side and a peripheral wall extending therefrom, the first major side having a first interior surface and the wall having a peripheral interior surface. A lid is sealingly coupled to the case along adjacent edges of the lid and the wall, the lid and said case forming an encasement of the capacitor structure, the lid comprising a second interior surface. A cathode material is disposed proximate the first and second interior surfaces, and an anode is positioned intermediate the cathode material and has a peripheral portion positioned proximate the adjacent edges. A protective layer on the peripheral portion protects the anode during the sealing process. A first insulative separator is positioned between the anode and the cathode material.

An electrochemical cell has a silver vanadium oxide cathode material formed into a pellet shape which expands as the cell is discharged. A cathode current collector circumferentially surrounds the cathode pellet and is in contact with the peripheral edge of the cathode pellet to prevent peripheral cathode expansion. The peripheral cathode current collector maintains a stable cell impedance during cell discharge. The cell has a D-shaped housing in which the cathode is disposed adjacent to a first interior surface, and a lithium anode is disposed adjacent to a second interior surface.

A high rate battery having a coiled electrode assembly housed in a case that efficiently utilizes the space available in many implantable medical devices is disclosed. The battery case provides a planar surface opposite an arcuate surface to allow for the close abutting of other components located within the implantable device while also providing for efficient location of the battery within an arcuate edge of the device. The battery cases include at least three planar sides extending between a top and a base of the battery case, wherein the arcuate side is located directly opposite one of the planar sides. The battery case may form a prismatic solid shape with one arcuate surface and five planar surfaces. The batteries may include a coiled electrode assembly including an anode and a cathode; electrolyte; and a case liner containing the electrode assembly. The coiled electrode assembly can have an elliptical cross-section including two arcuate ends, wherein one of the arcuate ends is nested within an arcuate side of the case. The batteries are capable of delivering about 20 joules or more in about 20 seconds or less; and may also be capable of delivering about 20 joules or more at least twice in a period of about 30 seconds. Also included are implantable defibrillator devices incorporating the batteries and methods of manufacturing the batteries including drawing the battery case from metal.

Volumetrically efficient battery for implantable medical devices

A feedthrough pin insulator and corresponding assembly for an electrochemical cell powering an implantable medical device are described herein. The feedthrough pin insulator electrically insulates a feedthrough pin extending between the internal and external portions of the cell from cell components having the same electrical potential as a cathode disposed within the cell. The feedthrough pin insulator extends between an anode disposed within the cell and a ferrule disposed in an aperture of a cover for sealing the cell. A gate or dam is disposed at one end of the insulator for preventing or inhibiting the formation of anode flash on the feedthrough pin or in other undesired locations or on certain cell components during the anode formation process. A method of forming an anode is also described which corresponds to the foregoing apparatus.
