A lightweight and low cost replacement display for a conventional cathode-ray tube (CRT) display is provided that projects distortion free digital images directly without conversion to analog signals. The display does not exhibit cross-talk interference when a plurality of displays are placed adjacent one another, and does not present large gaps between adjacent displays. The display utilizes a digital micromirror device that projects a 1:1 bit mapped digital signal to a plurality of micromirrors that are switchable between an on and an off state and projects the image of light reflected from the 'on' mirrors onto a direct view screen.

Projection screen to replace a CRT display for simulation

In a vehicular simulator including a cockpit and visual system wherein the visual system includes a hollow, partial spherical screen 18 surrounding a cockpit 14, and wherein both the cockpit 14 and spherical screen 18 are supported by a base support structure 16 such that the nominal eye point 24 of a pilot operator sitting in the cockpit 14 is at or near the center of the spherical screen 18. Improvement apparatus is provided comprising a first base means or structure 38 for providing a selected increase of the distance between the nominal eye point 24 and base platform 16. A second spacing means 40 and 42 are also provided which maintains the same selected distance increase between the spherical center of the screen 18 and the base platform 16. Left and right curved screen panels 44 and 46 having a spherical surface with the same diameter as the spherical screen are provided to the left and right of cockpit 14 such that bottom edge of spherical screen 18 is increased in selected areas by the panels.

Dome field of view scene extenders

A light at an aircraft landing site is simulated on a model board by the protruding output end of a precision cut optical fiber. The fiber is secured within a counterbore of a counterbored hole in the model board. The length of the precision cut fiber and the depth of the counterbore are closely controlled to ensure that the output end of the fiber protrudes a desired distance. The input end of the precision cut fiber is optically coupled to a collimated light source by a second optical fiber extending through the smaller diameter bore of the counterbored hole.

Simulated lights for an airfield model

The invention of this disclosure is a viewing head that packages a spherical mirror, beamsplitter, and cathode ray tube (CRT) in an enclosed container. The process of assembling the viewing head will automatically maintain the spherical mirror, beamsplitter, and CRT in optical alignment, making a time-consuming alignment procedure unnecessary. Because the optical equipment is contained within an enclosed container, the optical equipment will not have to be cleaned as often.
