The diposphines have the formula (I) ##STR1## wherein: R.sup.2, R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 independently from each other represent a hydrocarbyl group which is substituted with one or more radicals selected from the group consisting of halogen, alkyl and alkoxy, and A is --C(O)--, --S(O).sub.2 --, --S(O)-- or certain divalent organic groups. The diphosphines are useful for stabilizing thermoplastic polymers, such as polycarbonates, against thermal discoloration.

A method for bonding homopolymers or copolymers of vinylidene chloride to polyamides which method comprises blending the polymer or copolymer with low density polyethylene, high density polyethylene, linear low density polyethylene, homopolymer or copolymer of propylene, or a copolymer of ethylene and acrylic acid, methacrylic acid and a small amount of copolymer of ethylene and a lower alkyl or hydroxyalkyl ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid and then contacting the blend of polymers with the polyamide under heat and pressure. Unexpected adhesion between the Saran blend and the polyamide was found.

Blends of a vinylidene chloride polymer, an olefin polymer, and a compatibilizer polymer are successfully fabricated into films using the well-known inflated bubble technique, by using blow-up rates in the range of about 1.5 to 5.0 and a drawn-down ratio upwards of 6, preferably upwards of 8, but not exceeding the critical draw-down ratio of 13. At a draw-down ratio exceeding 13, the physical properties of the polymer blend are seriously diminished.

Novel interpolymers of ethylene, omega-alkenyl pyridines, such as vinylpyridines, and optionally, another monomer interpolymerizable therewith. The interpolymer is prepared by free-radical initiation in a reactor operated at a pressure of from about 70 MPa to about 350 MPa and a temperature of from about 50.degree. C. to about 300.degree. C. The interpolymers are primarily useful as adhesives.

Interpolymers of ethylene and unsaturated carboxylic acids

A carboxyl-containing ethylene copolymer composition exhibiting thermal stability and method for preparing the same. The composition comprises (a) an ethylene copolymer containing a carboxyl-functional comonomer in an amount ranging from about 0.01 to about 50 weight percent of the copolymer, and (b) a hydrated compound in intimate admixture therewith. The hydrate dehydrates at a temperature between about 100.degree. C. and about 300.degree. C. and is selected from hydrated metallic salts of organic acids, inorganic hydrates, bimetallic hydrates and combinations thereof. The hydrate is present in the composition in at least an amount effective to impart thermal stability thereto up to about 5 weight percent of the composition, preferably 0.01-0.45 weight percent. The composition is prepared by adding the hydrate to the copolymer and intimately mixing the hydrate and the copolymer. The addition and mixing steps are performed either during or subsequent to the manufacture of the copolymer.

Blown films of LLDPE having reduced block and increased slip are provided by incorporating into the polymer, before blowing into films, effective amounts of certain fatty acid amides and inorganic materials which provide fast bloom, thereby obtaining an expedient effect of the additives on the surface properties of the blown film.
