A method and apparatus for printing an image onto a medium such as paper incorporates elements of xerographic and direct marking printing technologies. A layer of colorless toner is applied to an intermediate surface, such as a charge receptor drum. The toner layer is compacted to reduce its porosity. Then, an ink image is applied to the toner layer, such as by ink jet printing. The toner layer including the embedded ink image is transferred from the charged receptor drum to a printing medium, such as paper. A fuser fixes the toner and embedded ink image onto the surface of the paper.

Method and apparatus for combining xerographic and ink jet printing

A compact xerographic copying or printing machine with fuser and xerographic sections placed close together, an air manifold separating the fuser and xerographic sections having plural air passages through which cooling air flows and forming one leg of a U-shaped thermal air curtain, an air baffle between the manifold and fuser sections and cooperating with the outside of the manifold to form the second leg of the air curtain so that air leaving the manifold undergoes a 180.degree. turn and passes through the second leg to a filter and the inlet of an exhaust fan.

Thermal air curtain for a copying/printing machine

The present invention is directed toward a flexible plastic platen used as a document support surface in a copying/printing machine. The platen, in a preferred embodiment, is an optically clear polycarbonate sheet, inexpensive and easy to handle. The platen is mounted in a machine frame so as to be slightly flexed upward along a width area corresponding to the area to be scan-illuminated to ensure accurate focusing of the document image through an underlying linear lens array. The platen is easily replaced by releasing the tension and lifting the platen out of a seated position.

Flexible document platen

Optical projection apparatus utilizing a pulley and cable mechanism for positioning optical components thereof which comprises a fixed pulley means, translatable pulley means and cable means entrained about the foregoing means. A clutch is provided to selectively preclude rotational movement of the fixed pulley means while translational movement is imparted to the translatable pulley means to thereby effect repositioning of the translatable pulley means relative to the fixed pulley means. An optical component fixed for movement with the translatable pulley means and an optical component fixed for movement with the cable can thereby be repositioned relative to each other by effecting translational movement of the translatable pulley means while simultaneously preventing rotational movement of the fixed pulley means. With rotational movement imparted to the fixed pulley means the optical components move either in the same direction or in opposite directions depending upon the manner in which the cable is wrapped about the translatable pulley means.

Magnification change mechanism

An optical system for strip scanning of an object in both directions of relative reciprocal motion between the object and the optical system. The object is first scanned in one direction, then the image orientation is rotated 180.degree. about the axis of propagation for scanning in the reverse direction. Properly oriented images are thus projected onto an image surface and move in the same direction during both directions of scan.

Optical system effecting image rotation

A copying system wherein a document master such as a page of a book, is electrostatically prepared on a photosensitive material in serial form as, for example, fanfolded web. The web bearing the masters is then used with an electrostatic type copier of a type adapted to automatically handle fanfolded material. The ends of the master bearing web may be joined together to form an endless loop to enable the masters to be recopied in sequence the number of times required to produce the number of book copies desired.
