A method and apparatus are disclosed for determining if an item of media is invalid. The method includes providing an ultrasound image of an item of media, determining a plurality of regions of the image that satisfy a pre-determined condition and determining that an item of media is invalid if the location of said regions satisfies a pre-determined condition.

A dual-stack document storage bin comprises a substantially U-shaped container including a first bottom wall which interconnects first and second sidewalls to provide (i) the substantially U-shape, and (ii) a first document storage chamber which is defined between the first and second sidewalls and into which documents can be stacked to form a first stack of documents when the U-shaped container is in a first position. The dual-stack document storage bin further comprises a substantially L-shaped housing including a second bottom wall and a third sidewall which is disposed relative to the second bottom wall to provide (i) the substantially L-shape, and (ii) a second document storage chamber which is defined between the third side wall and the second sidewall and into which documents can be stacked to form a second stack of documents when the U-shaped container is in a second position which is different from the first position. The dual-stack document storage bin also comprises a mechanism operatively coupled between the first and second bottom walls to support substantially horizontal sliding movement of the U-shaped container between the first position in which documents can be stacked onto the first stack of documents in the first document storage chamber and the second position in which documents can be stacked onto the second stack of documents in the second document storage chamber.

Dual-stack document storage bin for use in a self-service bunch document depositing terminal

A method of operating an image-based self-service check depositing terminal having an optical character recognition (OCR) reader comprises the steps of (a) receiving from a self-service depositor a check to be deposited, (b) illuminating the check with infrared radiation, (c) capturing a first image of the check while the check is illuminated with infrared radiation, (d) processing the first check image to provide an enhanced image of the check, and (e) applying OCR techniques to read a magnetic ink character recognition (MICR) codeline from the enhanced check image.

Methods of operating an image-based self-service check depositing terminal to provide enhanced check images and an apparatus therefor

A scaleable check processing module (SCPM) is provided for a self-service check depositing terminal. The SCPM comprises a supporting structure. The SCPM further comprises a first configurable mechanism located in the supporting structure and for (i) enabling a pocket module to be disposed at a first location of the supporting structure when the SCPM is to be installed into a first type of self-service check depositing terminal, (ii) enabling a pocket module to be disposed at a second location which is different from the first location of the supporting structure when the SCPM is to be installed into a second type of self-service check depositing terminal which is different from the first type of self-service depositing terminal, and (iii) enabling a pocket module to be disposed at a third location which is different from the first and second locations of the supporting structure when the SCPM is to be installed into a third type of self-service check depositing terminal which is different from the first and second types of self-service depositing terminals.

Scaleable check processing module for a self-service check depositing terminal

A method is provided of operating a remote check image capture device. The method comprises capturing a color image of a check provided by a user at the remote check image capture device, storing the color image of the check, deriving from the color image a non-color image of the check, transmitting to an institution the non-color image of the check, and receiving from the institution a request to retrieve the color image of the check in response to the institution determining that the non-color image of the check is unusable.

Method of operating a remote check image capture device and an apparatus therefor

A plunger moves from a retracted position to an extended position to engage a document which is on a receiving platform to push the document through an opening in the receiving platform and towards a stacking platform to stack the document on the stacking platform. The plunger moves from the extended position back to the retracted position to allow a biasing force which is acting on the stacking platform to press the document which has just been stacked on the stacking platform against the receiving platform. A supporting mechanism supports first and second plate members of the receiving platform for pivoting movement between a non-parallel position in which the plate members form a substantially wide V-shape to cup the document as the plunger pushes the document through the opening and onto the stacking platform, and a parallel position in which the plate members are substantially parallel to each other as the plunger moves back to the retracted position to allow the biasing force which is acting on the stacking platform to press the document which has just been stacked on the stacking platform against the receiving platform.
