A method includes receiving seismic data for a geologic region of the Earth; building a velocity model of the geologic region of the Earth; selecting at least one mode of multiple and corresponding travel time data from a data storage where the travel time data correspond to at least one complex ray signature in the geologic region of the Earth and are based at least in part on the velocity model; performing migration on the seismic data using at least the selected travel time data to generate processed seismic data; and rendering an image of the geologic region of the Earth to a display where the image includes at least a multiple image.

Methods and devices for transformation of collected data for improved visualization capability

Computing systems and methods for improving processing of collected data are disclosed. In one embodiment, while ray-tracing through a sub-surface region, a frequency- dependent outgoing ray direction is computed from a point on an interface disposed in the sub-surface region when the ray tracing is at the interface.

A technique includes processing first data indicative of a first image of a subsurface region of interest on a machine to generate second data indicative of a second image. The first image is derived from measurements of seismic waves, which propagate in a plurality of directions, and the second image is generated by partitioning the first image based on the directions. The technique includes processing the second data to determine a dip decomposition for each of the directions; and based on the dip decompositions and the directions, generating an angle domain common image gather.

A method for generating an illumination map. The method includes receiving an earth model that represents one or more properties of the earth. The method then includes receiving a target area in the earth model and propagating one or more wavefields from the target area to a potential seismic data acquisition region in the earth model. After propagating the wavefields, the method includes decomposing the propagated wavefields into one or more subsets of the propagated wavefields and creating the illumination map based on the subsets of the propagated wavefields. The illumination map may indicate one or more contributions of one or more synthetic source and receiver pairs for illuminating the target area in the earth model. The method may then include creating a seismic survey design based on the contributions.

To update a model of a subterranean structure, a partial decomposition is computed of an operator that is used to compute a parameterization representing the update of the model. The partial decomposition of the operator is selected from among a partial eigendecomposition of a Fisher information operator, and a singular value decomposition of the operator. A term based on additional information is combined with the partial decomposition of the operator to derive an update of the model.
