An interferometric optical fibre sensor comprises optical fibre defining an optical circuit configured to propagate a first optical wave via an environment in which the optical fibre can be exposed to a stimulus that modifies the first optical wave, and a second optical wave, and to combine the first optical wave and the second optical wave to create an interference signal containing information about the stimulus, wherein optical fibre propagating either or both of the first optical wave and the second optical wave comprises hollow core optical fibre configured to propagate the optical wave or waves by an antiresonant optical guidance effect.

A method of producing a planar substrate having waveguide channels, which method comprises: (i) providing a tube () of a substrate material; (ii) depositing silica layers () on the inside of the tube (), the silica layers () being doped with a photosensitive material; (iii) drawing the tube () so that the cross-sectional size of the tube () is reduced; (iv) before or after the reducing of the cross-sectional size of the tube (), causing the tube () to collapse into a flat shape by applying a low pressure to the tube, whereby the deposited silica layers together form a photosensitive silica layer (); (v) cutting to required lengths the tube () which has been collapsed and reduced in cross-sectional size; and (vi) using laser writing to define waveguide channels in the cut lengths of the tube () and thereby to produce the planar substrate having the waveguide channels.

Method of fabricating a planar substrate having optical waveguides

In one embodiment, a photo-darkening resistant optical fiber includes a waveguide having a numerical aperture less than 0.15. The waveguide includes a core having a refractive index nand a pedestal having a refractive index n, and wherein the fiber includes a first cladding having a refractive index nsurrounding the pedestal, wherein nis greater than n, nis greater than n. The core includes silica, a concentration of alumina of between approximately 0.3 to 0.8 mole percent, a concentration of phosphate of substantially 15 mole percent, a concentration of ytterbium substantially in the range 20000 to 45000 ppm. The pedestal can include silica, phosphate and germania. The core can have substantially zero thulium dopant.

Apparatus for providing optical radiation

Apparatus for providing optical radiation () comprising a pump array () for providing pump radiation (), a first pump combiner (), and a waveguide (), wherein the pump radiation () from the pump array () is coupled into the waveguide () via the first pump combiner (), and wherein the waveguide () comprises a pump guide () for guiding the pump radiation (), and a gain medium () which emits the optical radiation () when it is pumped by the pump radiation ().

Apparatus for providing optical radiation includes a pump source and at least one first amplifying waveguide. The first amplifying waveguide emits optical radiation in excess of 1400 nm when pumped by the pump source. In one embodiment, the pump source can include a plurality of laser diodes and a plurality of second amplifying waveguides. In this arrangement the first amplifying waveguide is pumped by the second amplifying waveguides, the second amplifying waveguides are pumped by the laser diodes, and the second amplifying waveguides are configured to improve the beam quality of radiation emitted by the laser diodes.

Eye safe high power fibre laser

A WDM transmitter comprising an array of M pump lasers multiplexed by an M&#xd7;N multiplexer, in the form of a coupler, and used to feed an array of N optically pumped fiber lasers emitting at wavelengths &#x3bb;, &#x3bb;, . . . &#x3bb;. The parameter M determines the number of pump lasers as well as the number of inputs of the pump-multiplexing coupler and can be smaller or equal to parameter N that determines the number of optically pumped lasers. The fiber laser outputs are passed through N isolators before entering N modulators were the signals are monolithically modulated. The outputs of the modulators are passed through an array of N tunable attenuators. Finally all the individual channel outputs are recombined into a single output in a combiner. The output will typically lead to an optical network. The proposed architecture may also be used for optical amplifiers, especially fiber-based optical amplifiers.

WDM transmitter

A method of fabricating a band-processing optical fibre filter having a center wavelength &lgr; &prime;, the method comprises (i) radius-reducing a mismatched multi-core optical fibre having a core phase matching wavelength (before radius reduction) of &lgr; and a radius (before radius reduction) of a , to a reduced radius Ra , where R&equals;&lgr; &prime;/&lgr; ; and (ii) providing light input and output connections to a section of the radius-reduced multi-core fibre so that input light is launched into one of the cores of the multi-core fibre section and output light emerges from one of the cores of the multi-core fibre section.

Optical fibre filters

A method of optical pulse propagation via a dispersive optical fibre, the method comprising the steps of: launching the optical pulses into the fibre at a pulse intensity sufficient to provide non-linear dispersion compensation during propagation through a first portion of the fibre; and providing a counter-chirping device to substantially compensate for the dispersion of a remaining, second portion of the fibre.

Optical glass, optical waveguide amplifier and optical waveguide laser

An optical fibre amplifier, laser or superluminescent source, consisting of a chalcogenide glass matrix hosting trivalent rare earth ions and which is doped with oxide in the form of a metallic oxide. The device utilizes the properties of the added oxide to improve the fabrication and efficiency of optical waveguide sources, in particular for applications around 1.3 &mgr;m. Specifically, the oxide broadens the wavelength range for pump absorption, broadens the wavelength range for light emission, increases the device efficiency through a change in lifetime of certain laser levels and modifies properties of the glass to prevent crystallization during fiber fabrication. The device exploits the intentional addition of oxide to improve amplifier, laser, glass and fiber properties.

Optical waveguide device

Multiple-cavity fiber optic lasers are fabricated with high-gain fibers in low-loss, high-finesse fiber ferrule resonance cavity configurations supported in low-loss ferrule alignment fixtures developed for use in FFP filters. These lasers incorporate rare-earth doped, sensitized glass fiber as the active medium within FFP cavities. FFP lasers of this invention include those exhibiting single-frequency and/or single-polarization mode operation with wide mode separation. Lasers provided include those with short cavity lengths, where the longest of the cavities of can be less than or equal to about 10 mm in length. These FFP laser sources are fixed-frequency or discretely-tunable. Multiple-cavity configurations in which at least one of the cavities formed contains active fiber are readily formed in fiber ferrule assemblies. FFP lasers can be end-pumped using single- or double-pass pumping configuration or pump resonance cavity configurations. Compound cavity FFP lasers of this invention can be readily and conveniently combined with fiber amplifiers to increase fiber laser output power. Ferrule assemblies and alignment fixtures afford simple, high-precision fiber alignment which is stable as a function of cavity tuning and over reasonable device operating temperatures.
