Apparatuses and methods for stabilizing an outboard motor of a watercraft during transport by a towed vehicle include a body having an outer member secured to the towed vehicle and an inner member disposed within and telescopingly movable relative to the outer member, the inner member having a head usable to contact and stabilize the outboard motor. A biasing member urges the inner member toward a retracted position. The inner member includes a first portion pivotally movable relative to a second portion, between an angled and a straight position. Contact between the first portion and the outer member prevents movement of the inner member toward the retracted position.

Apparatus and methods for stabilizing watercraft during transport

The invention is directed to a process for preparing polyamide polymers, particularly nylon 6, 6 and nylon 6, comprising fluoroether functionalized aromatic repeat units. In one embodiment, 1,6 diaminohexane, adipic acid, and fluoroether functionalized terephthallic or isophthallic acid or diester are reacted to form a polymer. The polymers so formed are useful for imparting soil resistance to polyamides, particularly in the form of films, molded parts, fibers, fabrics, and carpets.

The invention is directed to shaped articles fabricated from polyamides comprising fluoroether functionalized aromatic moieties. Aromatic polyesters are made in a continuous process in an extruder or extruder-like apparatus by reacting at elevated temperatures dicarboxylic acids, aliphatic esters of aromatic diols, and optionally aliphatic esters of aromatic hydroxyacids in an extruder while removing byproduct aliphatic carboxylic acid. The resulting aromatic polyesters, especially thermotropic liquid crystalline aromatic polyesters, are useful as molding resins for a variety of uses, for example electronic and electrical parts.

A process for producing polyamides from dinitriles and diamines in a continuous reaction using subsequent heating steps. In particular, the process involves contacting a dinitrile, a diamine, water, and optionally a catalyst to form a reaction mixture; heating the reaction mixture to a first elevated temperature of between about 180 to about 240&deg; C., maintaining said temperature for about 0.10 to about 20 hours, and optionally controlling the pressure in this heating step by venting; heating the reaction mixture to a second elevated temperature of between about 250 to about 350&deg; C., adding water to the reaction mixture before or after the second elevated temperature is reached, maintaining the pressure in the second heating step above atmospheric pressure by venting at least some of the water, and maintaining the second elevated temperature for a period of about 0.10 to about 10 hours; and recovering the polyamide.

Disclosed is a process for the preparation of polyamide polymers via prepolymer formation in a reactor system comprising a reactor, flasher and separator, crystallization of the prepolymer under controlled temperature conditions and the subsequent conversion of these crystallized prepolymers to high molecular weight polymer.

An improved method for manufacturing poly(hexamethylene adipamide), i.e. nylon 6,6, by reacting monomethyl adipate with hexamethylenediamine in an approximately equimolar ratio in the presence of water at a temperature of 100 to 165.degree. C. while simultaneous distilling off of a stoichiometric amount of methanol. The resulting aqueous intermediate product is then heated to 200 to 260.degree. C. while distilling off substantially all water at a pressure of 150 to 250 psig (1.03 .times.10.sup.6 to 1.72 .times.10.sup.6 Pa) followed by reducing the pressure to atmospheric pressure and increasing the temperature to 270 to 280.degree. C. to polycondense the distillate residue. Such a process is useful in producing high purity commercial grade poly(hexamethylene adipamide) that advantageously avoids problems caused by N-methylation of the polyamide.

An improved method for increasing the relative viscosity and molecular weight of a polyamide polymer (such as nylon 6,6, nylon 6, and the like) while in the solid state involving the use of a phosphorus-containing catalyst (such as 2(2'-pyridyl) ethyl phosphonic acid or the like) in combination with an oxygen free gas characterized by a low dew point (typically below 30.degree. C. and preferably below -30.degree. C.). The combination of affording commercial operation at greater through put at lower temperature. Such a process is of particular value during the production of terpolyamide and multipolyamide polymer intended for use in colored nylon fiber manufacture.
