A battery includes a stacked arrangement of electrochemical cells. Each electrochemical cell is free of a cell housing and includes a bipolar plate having a substrate, a first active material layer formed on a first surface of the substrate, and a second active material layer formed on a second surface of the substrate. Each cell includes a solid electrolyte layer that encapsulates at least one of the active material layers, and an edge insulating device that is disposed between the peripheral edges of the substrates of each pair of adjacent cells. Within each cell, an elastic seal is provided between the edge insulating device and the first surface of one cell or the solid electrolyte layer of an adjacent cell.

The edge insulating device physically contacts and is directly secured to one of the first surface of one cell and the solid electrolyte layer of an adjacent cell, and is movable relative to, the other of the first surface of the one cell and the solid electrolyte layer of the adjacent cell.

A battery pack includes a housing and electrochemical cells disposed in the housing. The housing includes a container and a lid that closes an open end of the container. The container has a base, an outer wall the surrounds the base, and a first and a second inner wall disposed inside the outer wall. The first inner wall extends between, and is fixed to, a first portion and a third portion of the outer wall, and is spaced apart from a second portion and a fourth portion of the outer wall. The second inner wall extends between the first portion and the third portion, and is disposed between the first inner wall and the fourth portion. The second inner wall is movable relative to the outer wall such that spacing of the second inner wall from the first inner wall can be changed.

An electrochemical cell includes a solid state material that functions as an electrolyte and a separator within the electrode assembly. The solid state material is a mixture of a polymer that is interspersed with an ionically conductive ceramic material.

The sealing device includes a heatable base plate that cooperates with a heatable split plate to simultaneously form three intersecting seal lines. The split plate includes an alpha plate and a beta plate. The alpha plate and the beta plate each include a first heated surface that cooperate with the base heated surface to form a pair of co-linear seal lines. In addition, the alpha plate and the beta plate each include a second heated surface that cooperate together to form a third seal line that extends in a direction perpendicular to the co-linear seal lines and intersects the co-linear seal lines. A method of forming a complex seal joint is also described.

A battery module comprises an electrochemical cell including a first dielectric layer positioned on a first side of the cell, a first side plate in opposition to the first side, and a first adhesive layer positioned between the first side plate and the first side. The first dielectric layer defines a first window. The first adhesive layer is adhered to the first side plate and the first side through the first window. Another battery module comprises first and second cells, a base plate, a frame, and a first and second adhesive portion. The frame includes a beam positioned between the first cell and the second cell and is in engagement with a first side and a second side of the first and second cells, respectively. The first adhesive portion and the second adhesive portions are positioned between the base plate and the bottom surfaces of the cells.

A dry primer film composite that includes a release carrier film and a pigmented sandable primer layer having a dry film thickness of 100 &#x3bc;m or greater overlying the carrier film, wherein the primer layer is a latent heat curing material; and uses of the dry primer film composite for spot repair of a substrate in need of repair. In preferred embodiments said primer layer is formed from a coating composition comprising a binder chosen from thermosetting acrylics, GMA acrylics, urethanes, epoxies, polyester and combinations thereof.

A method of manufacturing a molded article with a mold having an inner surface is provided. The method includes the steps of applying a substance to the inner surface of the mold, introducing a thermoplastic resin into the mold and onto the substance, defining a molded article having a surface, and maintaining contact of the thermoplastic resin and the substance for a predetermined time period. The thermoplastic resin has a predetermined heated energy and at least a portion of the heat energy is transferred to the substance. During the predetermined time period, the substance diffuses through at least a portion of the surface of the molded article.
