A multi-cycle scheduler for a processor includes early wake circuitry, late wake circuitry, and picker circuitry. In a first cycle of a clock, the early wake circuitry speculatively identifies child micro-operations as ready whose dependencies are satisfied by a set of ready parent micro-operations. In a second cycle of the clock, the picker circuitry picks at least one of the child micro-operations identified as ready for issue to execution circuitry. In addition, the late wake circuitry blocks from issue at least one picked child micro-operation speculatively identified as ready upon determining that a respective parent micro-operation did not issue to execution circuitry.

A method of operating a processing unit includes, in response to detecting that the processing unit is operating in a voltage limited state, calculating a set of headroom values by calculating a headroom value for each operational constraint in a set of operational constraints of the processing unit, based on the calculated set of headroom values, selecting from a set of performance features a subset of one or more performance features for enabling in the processing unit, and enabling the selected subset of performance features in the processing unit.

Enabling performance features for voltage limited processors

A system and method for tracking stores and loads to reduce load latency when forming the same memory address by bypassing a load store unit within an execution unit is disclosed. Store-load pairs which have a strong history of store-to-load forwarding are identified. Once identified, the load is memory renamed to the register stored by the store. The memory dependency predictor may also be used to detect loads that are dependent on a store but cannot be renamed. In such a configuration, the dependence is signaled to the load store unit and the load store unit uses the information to issue the load after the identified store has its physical address.

Tracking stores and loads by bypassing load store units

A system and method for using an operation (op) cache is disclosed. The system and method include an op cache for caching previously decoded instructions. The op cache includes a plurality of physically indexed and tagged instructions allowing sharing of instructions between threads. The op cache is chained through multiple ways allowing service of a plurality of instructions in a cache line. The op cache is stored between a shared operation storage and immediate/displacement storage to maximize capacity.

A system and method for tracking stores and loads to reduce load latency when forming the same memory address by bypassing a load store unit within an execution unit is disclosed. The system and method include storing data in one or more memory dependent architectural register numbers (MdArns), allocating the one or more MdArns to a MEMFILE, writing the allocated one or more MdArns to a map file, wherein the map file contains a MdArn map to enable subsequent access to an entry in the MEMFILE, upon receipt of a load request, checking a base, an index, a displacement and a match/hit via the map file to identify an entry in the MEMFILE and an associated store, and on a hit, providing the entry responsive to the load request from the one or more MdArns.

In a normal, non-loop mode a uOp buffer receives and stores for dispatch the uOps generated by a decode stage based on a received instruction sequence. In response to detecting a loop in the instruction sequence, the uOp buffer is placed into a loop mode whereby, after the uOps associated with the loop have been stored at the uOp buffer, storage of further uOps at the buffer is suspended. To execute the loop, the uOp buffer repeatedly dispatches the uOps associated with the loop's instructions until the end condition of the loop is met and the uOp buffer exits the loop mode.

A system and method for efficient improvement of branch prediction in a microprocessor with negligible impact on die-area, power consumption, and clock cycle period. It is determined if a program counter (PC) register contains a polymorphic indirect unconditional branch (PIUB) instruction. One determination may be searching a table with a portion or all of a PC of past PIUB instructions. If a hit occurs in this table, the global shift register (GSR) is updated by shifting a portion of the branch target address into the GSR, rather than updating the GSR with a taken/not-taken prediction bit. The stored value in the GSR is input into a hashing function along with the PC in order to index prediction tables such as a pattern history table (PHT), a branch target buffer (BTB), an indirect target array, or other. The updated value due to the PIUB instruction improves the accuracy of the prediction tables.

Branch history with polymorphic indirect branch information

Techniques are disclosed relating to improving the performance of branch prediction in processors. In one embodiment, a processor is disclosed that includes a branch prediction unit configured to predict a sequence of instructions to be issued by the processor for execution. The processor also includes a pattern detection unit configured to detect a pattern in the predicted sequence of instructions, where the pattern includes a plurality of predicted instructions. In response to the pattern detection unit detecting the pattern, the processor is configured to switch from issuing instructions predicted by the branch prediction unit to issuing the plurality of instructions. In some embodiments, the processor includes a replay unit that is configured to replay fetch addresses to an instruction fetch unit to cause the plurality of predicted instructions to be issued.

Detecting branch direction and target address pattern and supplying fetch address by replay unit instead of branch prediction unit

A memory subsystem includes a first memory, a second memory, a first compressor, and a first decompressor. The first memory is configured to store instruction bytes of a fetch window and to store first predecode information and first branch information that characterizes the instruction bytes of the fetch window. The second memory is configured to store the instruction bytes of the fetch window upon eviction of the instruction bytes from the first memory and to store combined predecode/branch information that also characterizes the instruction bytes of the fetch window. The first compressor is configured to compress the first predecode information and the first branch information into the combined predecode/branch information. The first decompressor is configured to decode at least some of the instruction bytes stored in the second memory to convert the combined predecode/branch information into second predecode information, which corresponds to an uncompressed version of the first predecode information, for storage in the third memory.

Techniques for storing instructions and related information in a memory hierarchy

A digital wavetable audio synthesizer is described. A synthesizer volume generator, which has several modes of controlling the volume, adds envelope, right offset, left offset, and effects volume to the data. The data can be placed in one of sixteen fixed stereo pan positions, or left and right offsets can be programmed to place the data anywhere in the stereo field. The left and right offset values can also be programmed to control the overall volume. Zipper noise is prevented by controlling the volume increment. A synthesizer LFO generator can ad LFO variation to: (i) the wavetable data addressing rate, for creating a vibrato effect; and (ii) a voice's volume, for creating a tremolo effect. Generated data to be output from the synthesizer is stored in left and right accumulators. However, when creating delay-based effects, data is stored in one of several effects accumulators. This data is then written to a wavetable. The difference between the wavetable write and read addresses for this data provides a delay for echo and reverb effects. LFO variations added to the read address create a chorus and flange effects. The volume of the delay-based effects data can be attenuated to provide volume decay for an echo effect. After the delay-based effects processing, the data can be provided with left and right offset volume components which determine how much of the effect is heard and its stereo position. The data is then stored in the left and right accumulators.

A monolithic integrated circuit for providing enhanced audio performance in personal computers. The monolithic circuit includes a wavetable synthesizer; a full function stereo coding and decoding circuit including analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog conversion; data compression, and mixing and muxing of analog signals; a local memory control module for interfacing with external memory; a game-MIDI port module; a system bus interface; and a control module for compatibility and circuit control functions.

Monolithic PC audio circuit

A first and second integrated circuit contain respectively a first and second portion of a parallel port, the first portion includes control, configuration, data and status registers and the second portion includes parallel port input and output terminals. A bus couples the first and second integrated circuits and transfers parallel port control and data information between the first and second integrated circuits. The bus includes a clock line providing a clock signal. The bus also includes a data out line that serially transfers output control and data bits from the first to the second integrated circuit, the data and control bits to be provided to the parallel port output terminals on the second integrated circuit. The bus also includes a data in line providing input data and control information from the terminals of the parallel port to the first integrated circuit. The bus provides data either substantially continuously in frames defined by a frame sync or uses a start bit to go from an idle state to a data transfer state according to the read and write operations of the parallel port. The mode of operation of the parallel port determines whether data is transferred continuously in frames or after a start bit.

A first and a second local interrupt controller are disposed on a single integrated circuit. The first and second local interrupt controllers are coupled to controllably provide at least one interrupt request signal, respectively, to a first and second processor. An input/output (I/O) interrupt controller is also on the integrated circuit and coupled to receive an interrupt request from at least one input/output device. A communication circuit on the integrated circuit is coupled to the input/output interrupt controller and the first and second local interrupt controllers. The communication circuit provides for transfer of interrupt information between the first local interrupt controller, the second local interrupt controller and the input/output interrupt controller.

A digital wavetable audio synthesizer including a synthesizer volume generator. The volume generator causing a data sample to be multiplied by volume components that add right offset, left offset, and effects volume to the data. The left and right offsets provide stereo field positioning, and the effects volume is used in generating an echo effect. The data sample can be placed in one of sixteen fixed stereo pan positions, or alternatively the left and right offset values can be programmed to place the data anywhere in the stereo field. The synthesizer includes a register array programmed with right and left offset values for providing wavetable data with right and left offset volume components. The synthesizer also includes a first storage device for storing the right offset value, a second storage device for storing the left offset value, and multiplication circuitry connected to both storage devices for providing wavetable data with right and left offset volume components based on values stored in the first and second storage devices.

A digital wavetable audio synthesizer is described. The synthesizer can generate up to 32 high-quality audio digital signals or voices, including delay-based effects, at either a 44.1 KHz sample rate or at sample rates compatible with a prior art wavetable synthesizer. The synthesizer includes an address generator which has several modes of addressing wavetable data. The address generator's addressing rate controls the pitch of the synthesizer's output signal. The synthesizer performs a 10-bit interpolation, using the wavetable data addressed by the address generator, to interpolate additional data samples. When the address generator loops through a block of data, the signal path interpolates between the data at the end and start addresses of the block of data to prevent discontinuities in the generated signal.
