A computer game controller is provided that can be attached to a desktop having a lip of greater thickness located near an outer portion of the desktop and an underside surface located on an inner portion of the desktop. The lip has a substantially greater thickness than the remainder of the desktop and this poses a substantial challenge to the proper gripping and mechanical advantage required by a clamp device. In one embodiment of the present device, the present computer controller includes a housing with a substantially flat, planar bottom surface that will act as one side of the clamp. The controller has a clamp arm coupled to the housing so that a distal contact surface of the arm is substantially opposed to the bottom surface of the housing to operably compress a portion of a desktop therebetween. The arm is designed to have a length sufficient to allow the distal contact surface of the arm to reach the underside surface of the desktop, thus allowing the arm to grip a portion of the desktop located beyond the lip. Gripping an inner portion of the desktop allows the arm to increase its mechanical advantage in securing the object or computer peripheral to the desktop.

The present invention provides an improved image scanner which has a hollow platen, with a motor mounted inside the platen. A drive mechanism is coupled between the motor and the inside surface of the platen to rotate the platen. Preferably, a circuit board containing circuitry for at least controlling the motor is also mounted inside the platen.

An improved track ball which can be conveniently manipulated with a single hand is disclosed. The track ball protrudes through a circular opening in a housing, with the top edge of the housing having a rounded switch. The switch can thus be manipulated with the fingers while the palm or thumb of the hand is manipulating the track ball. The housing is mounted at an angle to the side of a computer keyboard, providing for easy access. The track ball housing can be rotated to any continuous angle through two angles of rotation by the user. A tetrahedron support arrangement holds the ball in place at any angle. The same housing can be used for either the right or left sides of a keyboard by simply switching the activating point on the switch. An encoder wheel is attached by a shaft to the ball and has a number of slots extending from its center to its edge. The slots are rectangular in shape, and do not have edges along radial lines as in the prior art encoder wheels.

The present invention provides a hand held scanner with a motorized drive capability. The motorized drive employs a clutchless motor system. In manual operation, the scanner operates as a standard non-motorized scanner in which the user can neither see nor feel any effects of the motor system. In the motorized mode, a worm gear mounted on the motor's drive shaft causes the drive gear/friction wheel assembly to engage the drive rollers.

A hand scanner employs either uniformly or variably frosted scan windows to control illumination. For scanning color documents including books and magazines, a hand scanner employs a fluorescent tube mounted a certain distance above the lower surface of the scanner housing. At the fluorescent tube ends, corresponding to the illumination 'dead space' of the fluorescent tube, the underlying portion of the scanner housing is recessed towards the tube.
