Disclosed is a process for depositing marking material onto a substrate which comprises (a) providing a propellant to a printhead, said printhead having defined therein at least one channel, each channel having an inner surface and an exit orifice with a width no larger than about 250 microns through which the propellant can flow, said propellant flowing through each channel, thereby forming a propellant stream having kinetic energy, each channel directing the propellant stream toward the substrate, the inner surface of each channel having thereon a conductive polymer coating; and (b) controllably introducing a particulate marking material into the propellant stream in each channel, wherein the kinetic energy of the propellant stream causes the particulate marking material to impact the substrate.

Apparatus and process for ballistic aerosol marking

Disclosed is an apparatus for depositing a particulate marking material onto a substrate, comprising (a) a printhead having defined therein at least one channel, each channel having an inner surface and an exit orifice with a width no larger than about 250 microns, the inner surface of each channel having thereon a conductive polymer coating; (b) a propellant source connected to each channel such that propellant provided by the propellant source can flow through each channel to form propellant streams therein, the propellant streams having kinetic energy, each channel directing the propellant stream through the exit orifice toward the substrate; and (c) a marking material reservoir having an inner surface, the inner surface having thereon the conductive polymer coating, the reservoir containing particles of a particulate marking material, the reservoir being communicatively connected to each channel such that the particulate marking material from the reservoir can be controllably introduced into the propellant stream in each channel so that the kinetic energy of the propellant stream can cause the particulate marking material to impact the substrate.

Apparatus and process ballistic aerosol marking

Disclosed is a recording substrate which comprises (a) a cellulosic substrate having a first surface and a second surface opposite the first surface; (b) on the first surface of the cellulosic substrate and in contact therewith, a first coating comprising (i) a cold-water-soluble hydrophilic binder polymer, (ii) an ink spreading/ink wetting agent, (iii) a cationic dye mordant, (iv) a lightfastness-imparting agent, (v) a filler, and (vi) an optional biocide, (c) on the first surface of the cellulosic substrate and in contact with the first coating, a second coating comprising (i) a hot-water-soluble or alcohol-soluble material and (ii) a phosphonium salt; and (d) on the second surface of the cellulosic substrate and in contact therewith, a third coating comprising (i) a binder polymer with a glass transition temperature of from about &minus;50 to about 50&deg; C., (ii) an antistatic agent, (iii) a lightfastness-imparting agent, (iv) a filler, and (v) an optional biocide.

Ink jet inks

Disclosed is an ink composition which comprises an aqueous liquid vehicle, a colorant, and an additive material selected from the group consisting of (a) symmetric acetylenic bisester alcohols, (b) symmetric acetylenic bisalkyl alcohols and acetylenic bisalkoxy alcohols, (c) symmetric acetylenic bisamido alcohols, (d) symmetric bisamido alcohols, (e) mono amido alcohols, (f) trialkylhydroxy compounds, (g) derivatives of 1,2-diols and 1,3-diols, (h) thio diols, (i) aromatic diols, (j) heterocyclic diols, (k) imino alcohols, (l) salts of hydroxyl compounds, (m) saccharides and saccharide derivatives, and (n) mixtures thereof. Also disclosed is an ink jet process which comprises (1) incorporating into a thermal ink jet printing apparatus the aforementioned ink composition; and (2) causing droplets of the ink to be ejected from the printing apparatus in an imagewise pattern onto a substrate, thereby generating images on the substrate. Further disclosed is an ink jet printing process which comprises (1) incorporating into a thermal ink jet printing apparatus the aforementioned ink composition; (2) causing droplets of the ink to be ejected from the printing apparatus in an imagewise pattern onto a substrate, thereby generating images on the substrate; and (3) exposing the substrate to microwave radiation, thereby drying the images on the substrate.

Ink jet inks and printing processes

A transparency comprised of a supporting substrate, and thereover two coatings, a first coating layer which comprises a binder having a melting point of 100.degree. to 275.degree. C. and a heat dissipating and a fire retardant component, a second dye immobilizing light resistant, water resistant ink receiving coating layer situated so that the first coating layer is between the second dye immobilizing light resistant, water resistant ink receiving coating layer, and the substrate, said second dye immobilizing light resistant, water resistant coating layer comprising a blend of a hydrophilic polymer, an ink spreading agent, cationic component monomeric or polymeric capable of complexing with the ink dyes used to develop the transparency, a lightfastness inducing agent, and/or mixtures thereof, a filler and a biocide, and preferably wherein the two coatings are present on each surface of the supporting substrate.

Ink jet transparencies

A transparency comprised of a supporting substrate, thereover a first coating layer comprised of an ink absorbing layer and a biocide; and a second ink spreading coating layer comprised of a hydrophilic vinyl binder, a dye mordant, a filler, an optional lightfastness inducing agent, and an ink spot size increasing agent selected from the group consisting of hydroxy acids, amino acids and polycarboxyl compounds; and wherein the first coating is in contact with the substrate and is situated between the substrate and the second ink coating, and which transparency possesses a haze value of from about 0.5 to about 10 and a lightfastness value of from about 95 to about 98.

A transparency comprised of a supporting substrate, thereover a first coating layer comprised of an anionic layer that binds well with the substrate; and a second cationic layer situated on the top of the first anionic layer that binds with the anionic layer and comprised of cationic quaternary monomers and polymers thereof and a lightfastness inducing agent; and a third ink receiving layer situated on the top of the second cationic layer and comprised of block copolymers and graft polymers, a biocide and a filler; which transparency possesses a haze value of from about 0.5 to about 10 and a lightfastness value of from about 95 to about 98.
