Methods and systems are provided for a hydrocarbon (HC) trap system in an engine air induction system. In one example, a system may include a pillow-case type HC trap housed in a rectangular opening formed in a wall of an air conduit at the outlet of an air cleaner box. A frame may be integrally formed around the opening to support the HC trap protruding outward from the wall.

Induction system including a hydrocarbon trap

An air intake system for a combustion engine includes an air intake duct in fluid communication with an engine intake manifold and a conduit component inserted into the air intake duct along a first assembly direction. The air intake system also includes a hydrocarbon (HC) trap secured to the conduit component within the air intake duct. The conduit component defines at least one retention feature to maintain a position of the HC trap such that removal of the HC trap from the air intake duct results in structural compromise of the at least one retention feature. The air intake duct is also configured to shield the at least one retention feature from user access to inhibit user removal of the HC trap.

Tamper resistant hydrocarbon trap for combustion engines

A dual path fuel vapor purge system is disclosed for an engine having a turbocharger or a super. The purge system includes a canister configured to collect fuel vapor from a fuel tank. A canister purge valve is provided downstream from the canister. An ejector valve receives fuel vapors from the canister through the canister purge valve. A first vapor purge path directs the fuel vapor to an intake manifold of the engine. A second vapor purge path directs fuel vapor to an air induction system. A check valve downstream from the ejector valve receives the fuel vapor from the ejector and supplies the fuel vapor to the air induction system. Boost flow opens the check valve when the air induction system is in operation to boost the engine and closes the check valve when the engine is in operation with normal aspiration or when a leak is detected.

Dual path purge system for a turbocharged engine

An integrated hydrocarbon trap and air filter in the soundtube of a vehicle for use in conjunction with the engine's air intake system is disclosed. The trap and air filter comprises a housing body having first and second ends. The housing includes hydrocarbon-adsorbing media and air filter media. The hydrocarbon-adsorbing and air filter trap are incorporated into a soundtube. A first soundtube portion connects the housing to the engine's air intake system while a second soundtube is open to ambient and connects the housing to a vehicle body structure such as a fender. Selection of the body diameter, thickness, and length, the dimensions and type of both air filter media and hydrocarbon-adsorbing media and position of the air filter media, NVH media, and space relative to the trap media and location of the integrated hydrocarbon trap and air filter along the soundtube provide superior tunability and adaptability.

Vapors in the fuel tank of a vehicle are collected in a carbon canister. An ejector or aspirator is used to purge the carbon canister in a pressure-charged engine in which a positive pressure exists in the intake. A compact ejector includes a substantially planar flange and a venturi tube coupled to the flange with a central axis of the venturi tube substantially parallel to the flange. By manufacturing the ejector in two pieces, dimensions within the ejector: throat, converging section, and diverging section, is more accurate than prior art manufacturing techniques thereby providing better flow characteristics throughout the boost range.

Manufacture of a compact ejector system for a boosted internal combustion engine

Vapors in the fuel tank of a vehicle are collected in a carbon canister. An ejector or aspirator is used to purge the carbon canister in a pressure-charged engine in which a positive pressure exists in the intake. A compact ejector includes a substantially planar flange and a venturi tube coupled to the flange with a central axis of the venturi tube substantially parallel to the flange. By mounting the ejector on an intake component, having the venturi tube on the inside of the intake component, and having the venturi tube parallel to the flange yields a very compact package and protects the ejector from damage from other engine components.

The HC trap includes a stack of consecutively layered polymeric sheets with at least a portion of the sheets impregnated with a HC vapor adsorption/desorption material, the stack of sheets extending from a first exterior surface to a second exterior surface.

A hydrocarbon trap assembly for use in an intake system of a motor vehicle engine includes a first duct having an interior recess adjacent an end thereof, the recess having a blind end; a second duct overlapping the first duct's end and closing off a second end of the recess; and a thermoformed hydrocarbon-adsorbing sleeve inside the recess and having a first edge adjacent the blind end and a second edge adjacent the second end of the recess. One or both ends of the sleeve may engage a hook formed on the respective first and/or second ducts. The second end of the sleeve may have a flange that fits into a gap between the ducts.

An engine intake duct is formed by securing a hydrocarbon-adsorbing element to a frame to form an insert, positioning the insert in registry with a blow-molding core, placing a molten plastic parison and mold around the insert and core, and blow-molding the parison to form a shell engaging the frame to retain the insert with a surface of the insert exposed to a hollow interior of the shell.

Devices, systems and methods are provided for adsorbing hydrocarbons from the air intake system of an internal combustion engine. The devices, systems and methods include a hydrocarbon absorbent material, and a structural element configured to hold the hydrocarbon absorbent material within a clean air tube of an internal combustion engine.

Engine hydrocarbon adsorber

An air induction system of an automotive internal combustion engine comprises an evaporative emission control device inserted into an air intake tube connecting an air cleaner canister and an intake manifold of the engine. The evaporative emission control device comprises a rigid tubular body that includes an upstream end and a downstream end. A hydrocarbon vapor absorbing element is disposed within the rigid tubular body such that the upstream face is recessed from the upstream end of the rigid tubular body, and the downstream face is recessed from the downstream end of the rigid tubular body. The extended ends of the rigid tubular body thereby protect the recessed faces from incidental contact. The air intake tube is formed of elastomeric material that provides flexible support for the evaporative emission control device to protect against damage due to vibration.
