Methods of oxidizing multiwalled carbon nanotubes are provided. The multiwalled carbon nanotubes are oxidized by contacting the carbon nanotubes with gas-phase oxidizing agents such as CO, O, steam, NO, NO, NO, O, and ClO. Near critical and supercritical water can also be used as oxidizing agents. The multiwalled carbon nanotubes oxidized according to methods of the invention can be used to prepare rigid porous structures which can be utilized to form electrodes for fabrication of improved electrochemical capacitors.

Methods of oxidizing multiwalled carbon nanotubes

An activated catalyst capable of selectively growing single-walled carbon nanotubes when reacted with carbonaceous gas is provided. The activated catalyst is formed by reducing a catalyst that comprises a complex oxide. The complex oxide may be of formula AFBGOwherein x/y&#x2266;2; z/y&#x2266;4; 0&#x2266;w&#x2266;0.3x; 0&#x2266;v&#x2266;0.3y; A is a Group VIII element; F is an element that is different from A but has, in said composition, the same valence state as A; B is an element different from A and F, and is an element whose simple oxide, in which B is at the same valence state as in the complex oxide, is not reducible in the presence of hydrogen gas at a temperature less than about 900&#xb0; C.; G is an element different from A, B and F, and is an element whose simple oxide, in which G is at the same valence state as in the complex oxide, is not reducible in the presence of hydrogen gas at a temperature less than about 900&#xb0; C.; and O is oxygen. The complex oxide is reduced at a temperature less that 950&#xb0; C. Methods of making, uses for and carbon fibril-containing product made with these activated catalysts are also provided.

Single-walled carbon nanotube catalysts and method for preparing same

An improved catalyst for producing carbon fibrils is made by incorporating an effective yield-enhancing amount of a carboxylate into a fibril-forming catalyst. Alternatively, such a catalyst is made by coprecipitating a compound of a metal having fibril-forming catalytic properties and an aluminum and/or magnesium compound, optionally in the presence of carbon particles or carbon fibril aggregates. The catalyst may also be made by incorporating a compound of a fibril-forming metal onto magnesia particles in carbon particles or carbon fibril aggregates. The catalysts, methods of using them to form carbon fibrils and those carbon fibrils are also disclosed.

Methods and catalysts for the manufacture of carbon fibrils

A new method for preparing a supported catalyst is herein provided. Carbon nanotubes are functionalized by contacting them with an oxidizing agent to form functionalized carbon nanotubes. A metal catalyst is then loaded or deposited onto the functionalized carbon nanotubes. The mixture is then extruded to form the supported catalyst comprising a carbon nanotube structure containing metal catalyst more evenly dispersed within the internal structure of the carbon nanotube structure.

Methods of preparing supported catalysts from metal loaded carbon nanotubes

A new method for preparing a supported catalyst is herein provided. The supported catalyst comprises a carbon nanotube network structure containing metal catalysts. The metal catalyst may be loaded onto functionalized carbon nanotubes before forming the carbon nanotube network structure. Alternatively, the metal catalyst may be loaded onto the carbon nanotube network structures themselves.

Method for preparing catalysts supported on carbon nanotubes networks

A plurality of carbide, such as silicon carbide, tungsten carbide, etc., nanofibrils predominantly having diameters substantially less than about 100 nm and a method for making such carbide nanofibrils. The method includes the steps of: heating a plurality of carbon nanotubes or nanofibrils predominantly having diameters less than about 50 nm in a reaction chamber in the presence of a gas of the form QA, where Q is a metal capable of forming a carbide, A is an element or radical and n and m are integers necessary to satisfy valences, such as, for example silicon monoxide, and an inert gas in a reaction vessel to a temperature substantially less than 1700 C but sufficently high to cause substantial reaction of the metal in the gas with the carbon of said carbon nanotubes or nanofibrils to form, in situ, solid carbide nanofibrils, the temperature being sufficiently low to prevent substantial fusing together of individidual ones of said carbide nanofibrils, removing at least a portion of A-based gas from said reaction chamber as said reaction progresses, and maintaining said temperature until substantially all the carbon of said nanotubes or nanofibrils has been converted into Q-based carbide.

Carbide nanofibrils and method of making same

Graphitic nanotubes, which includes tubular fullerenes (commonly called 'buckytubes') and fibrils, which are functionalized by chemical substitution or by adsorption of functional moieties. More specifically the invention relates to graphitic nanotubes which are uniformly or non-uniformly substituted with chemical moieties or upon which certain cyclic compounds are adsorbed and to complex structures comprised of such functionalized fibrils linked to one another. The invention also relates to methods of introducing functional groups onto the surface of such fibrils.

Compositions including carbide-containing nanorods and/or oxycarbide-containing nanorods and/or carbon nanotubes bearing carbides and oxycarbides and methods of making the same are provided. Rigid porous structures including oxycarbide-containing nanorods and/or carbide containing nanorods and/or carbon nanotubes bearing carbides and oxycarbides and methods of making the same are also provided. The compositions and rigid porous structures of the invention can be used either as catalyst and/or catalyst supports in fluid phase catalytic chemical reactions. Processes for making supported catalyst for selected fluid phase catalytic reactions are also provided.

Processes for making supported catalyst for selected fluid phase catalytic reactions are also provided.

Methods of making carbide and oxycarbide containing catalysts

A new method for preparing a supported catalyst is herein provided. A carbon nanotube structure such as a rigid porous structure is formed from single walled carbon nanotubes. A metal catalyst is then loaded or deposited onto the carbon nanotube structure. The loaded carbon nanotube is preferably ground to powder form.

Method for preparing catalyst supports and supported catalysts from single walled carbon nanotubes

Compositions including modified carbide-containing nanorods and/or modified oxycarbide-containing nanorods and/or modified carbon nanotubes bearing carbides and oxycarbides and methods of making the same are provided. Rigid porous structures including modified oxycarbide-containing nanorods and/or modified carbide containing nanorods and/or modified carbon nanotubes bearing modified carbides and oxycarbides and methods of making the same are also provided. The compositions and rigid porous structures of the invention can be used either as catalyst and/or catalyst supports in fluid phase catalytic chemical reactions. Processes for making supported catalyst for selected fluid phase catalytic reactions are also provided.
