In general, the subject matter described in this disclosure can be embodied in a display panel. The display panel includes a first area of multiple pixels that has a first density of light emitting diodes (LEDs), and that has an equal representation of LEDs of a first color, a second color, and a third color. Each pixel in the first area has: (i) a first sub-pixel comprising an LED of the first color, (ii) a second sub-pixel comprising an LED of the second color, and (iii) a third sub-pixel comprising an LED of the third color. The display panel includes a second area of multiple pixels that borders the first area, that has a second density of LEDs that is lower than the first density, and that has an unequal representation of LEDS of the first color, the second color, and the third color.

An apparatus is described that includes a light emitting diode (LED) display and a sensor. The LED display includes pixel emissive areas that are each coupled by a corresponding conductive trace to a corresponding pixel circuit that drives the respective pixel emissive area. The LED display has a high density region, a low density region, and a transition region between the high density region and the low density region. A pattern of the pixel circuits in the transition region matches a pattern of pixel circuits in the low density region, with at least some conductive traces that couple pixel emissive areas to pixel circuits in the transition region being longer than corresponding conductive traces that couple pixel emissive areas to pixel circuits in the low density region. The sensor is arranged to receive electromagnetic radiation transmitted through the low density region of the LED display.

A system and method for hover detection and touch detection in a display. In one embodiment, a first set of infrared (IR) emitters illuminates the interior of a transparent layer and the IR light is confined to the interior of the layer by total internal reflection, unless an object, such as a finger, touches the surface of the layer. Additional IR emitters at a different wavelength illuminate the volume outside of the display for hover detection. Two sets of wavelength-selective IR sensors, such as quantum dot sensors, are embedded in the display and are used to localize one or more fingers touching, or hovering near, the display.
