A system for correlating and displaying dissimilar communication protocols is disclosed. In one embodiment, the system comprises user communication information that spans at least two dissimilar communication networks, a first communication protocol associated with a first communication network, a second communication protocol associated with a second communication network, and a software code segment configured to detect a first call identifier associated with the first communication protocol, the software code segment also configured to detect a second call identifier associated with the second communication protocol, where the first call identifier and the second call identifier are correlated to a particular call. The system displays the correlated call identifiers to a user in a real-time call flow record.

System and method for correlation and real-time display of mapped PSTN trunk identifiers and gateway control protocol endpoints

Request and response messages conforming to a protocol such as Media Gateway Control Protocol between media gateways and a media gateway controller are examined to enable them to be correlated. The correlated messages are assembled to produce a call detail record describing a voice or data call established over an IP network via the media gateways under the control of the media gateway controller.

Generating call detail records

Retransmission of packets in a TCP network is measured by monitoring packets traversing bearer links between nodes and examining the sequence number within its connection of each packet. For each TCP connection being monitored a next expected sequence number (NESN) value is maintained and compared with the actual sequence number of a packet in that connection. If the sequence number is less than the NESN, a retransmission count is incremented by the size of the retransmitted TCP payload; if it is greater than the NESN, a loss counter is incremented by the size of the lost TCP payload. The resulting counts of the lost and retransmitted TCP payload, of the lost and retransmitted packets, enable accurate measurements to be made even at a point remote from the sending node. Comparison of counts from spaced points in a network can enable the location of a fault to be determined at least approximately.

Measuring efficiency of data transmission

Signalling messages conforming to different signalling protocols in a distributed switch telecommunications network are correlated by associating specific pairs of messages according to parameters they have in common. Inter-MGC IAMs and SS7 IAMs are correlated by the combination of Calling & Called address parameters; the connection descriptor parameter included in inter-MGC IAMs and MGCP OK messages can be used to correlate these messages; and the MGCP OK message can be correlated with the MGCP CRCX message using the transaction ID. Hence a correspondence can be deduced between an MGCP endpointname (in the CRCX message) and an ISUP OPC-DPC-CIC identification (in the SS7 IAM).
