An inkjet printer includes a first printhead and a second printhead in a print zone. A controller operates an actuator to move the first printhead to a first position to enable every inkjet in a plurality of inkjets in the first printhead to eject ink onto a surface of a print medium. The controller operates a first inkjet in the first printhead that overlaps with a second inkjet in the second printhead in a cross-process direction to eject ink from only one of the inkjets for each pixel of image data that corresponds to the location of the first and second inkjets in the cross-process direction.

Methods of forming images on substrates in printing and apparatuses for forming images on substrates in printing are provided. An exemplary embodiment of the methods of forming images on substrates in printing includes applying ink onto a surface of a substrate; irradiating the ink on the surface of the substrate with first radiation to partially-cure the ink; applying pressure to the substrate and partially-cured ink at a nip with a first surface of a first member and a second surface of a second member to level the ink on the surface of the substrate; and irradiating the as-leveled ink on the surface of the substrate with second radiation to substantially fully cure the ink.

Apparatuses and methods for forming images on substrates in printing are provided and may include a first marking station for applying a first ink having a first color to a surface of a substrate, a first partial-curing station downstream from the first marking station, a second marking station downstream from the first partial-curing station for applying a second ink having a second color to the surface of the substrate, a second partial-curing station downstream from the second marking station, a leveling device for applying pressure to the substrate and the partially-cured first ink and second ink to level the first ink and second ink on the surface of the substrate, and a post-leveling curing device for irradiating the as-leveled first ink and second ink on the surface of the substrate to substantially-fully cure the first ink and the second ink.

Methods of adjusting gloss of images locally on substrates using ink partial-curing and contact leveling and apparatuses useful in forming images on  substrates

Apparatuses and methods for forming images on substrates in printing are provided. An exemplary embodiment of the apparatuses includes a first marking station for applying a first ink having a first color to a substrate; a first partial-curing station downstream from the first marking station including a first radiant energy source for irradiating the first ink on the substrate with first radiation to partially-cure the first ink; a second marking station downstream from the first partial-curing station for applying a second ink having a second color to the substrate; a second partial-curing station downstream from the second marking station including a second radiant energy source for irradiating the first ink and the second ink on the substrate with second radiation to further partially-cure the first ink and to partially-cure the second ink; a leveling device formed by a first member and a second member, the first member and second member being configured to apply pressure to the partially-cured first ink and second ink when the substrate is received at a nip to level the first ink and second ink on the surface of the substrate; and a post-leveling curing device for irradiating the as-leveled first ink and second ink on the surface of the substrate to substantially-fully cure the first ink and the second ink.

Methods of adjusting gloss of images on substrates using ink partial-curing and contact leveling and apparatuses useful in forming images on substrates

Apparatuses useful for printing and methods of are provided. The apparatus includes a user interface for operating the printing apparatus, a fuser for fusing media, the fuser having a plurality of temperature settings, a gloss meter for measuring gloss of an image fused on the media, and a controller controlling the printing apparatus, wherein the controller: a) causes fusing of a plurality of media of a first type at a nominal fusing temperature, and then measuring a temperature of the pressure roll as a steady state pressure roll temperature, b) causes media of the first type to be input to the fuser to fuse an image onto the media, the fuser having a first fusing temperature, c) causes the gloss meter to measure a gloss level of the image fused on the media, and sending the measured gloss level with the first type of media to the controller, d) causes steps b) and c) to be repeated at various fusing temperatures different from the first fusing temperature, and saving the measured gloss levels with corresponding fuser temperatures, e) in response to a user indication of a desired gloss level received over the user interface, sets a temperature of the pressure roll to the steady state pressure roll temperature, and f) fuses media utilizing one of the measured fusing temperatures corresponding to the desired gloss level.

Apparatuses useful for printing and corresponding methods

Disclosed herein is a xerographic print comprising a substrate with a toner-based image printed thereon, the printed substrate including low surface tension portions having a surface tension of no more than about 22 mN/m at 25 Deg. C. resulting in a surface tension gradient field on the substrate, the printed substrate being coated with a coating comprising at least one surfactant and a film-forming polymer, the coating having a liquid phase surface tension at 25 Deg. C. not exceeding the surface tension of the low surface tension portions of the printed substrate by more than about 2 mN/m, the coating having substantially no pinholes and being sufficiently resistant to permeation by the fuser oil to exhibit an effective absence of haze 24 hours after application. A system and a method of applying a substantially pinhole-free and haze-free coating substantially immediately after print fusing also are disclosed.

Fuser assemblies for fusing toner on media, xerographic apparatuses, and methods of fusing toner on media in xerographic apparatuses are disclosed. An embodiment of the fuser assemblies includes a fuser belt; a first roll supporting the fuser belt, the first roll including a first heating element and a second heating element extending axially along the first roll and along a width of the fuser belt, the first heating element being longer than the second heating element; and a second roll supporting the fuser belt, the second roll including a third heating element and a fourth heating element extending axially along the second roll and along the width of the fuser belt, the third heating element being longer than the fourth heating element.

Fuser assemblies, xerographic apparatuses and methods of fusing toner on media

Embodiments herein include a media conditioning module for being connected between a media source supplying sheets of media and a printing device. The media conditioning module is adapted to remove moisture from the sheets of media received from the media source before the sheets of media are supplied to the printing device. The media conditioning module comprises a heater and a cooler. The heater has manifolds positioned to supply heated air to both sides of the sheets of media as the sheets of media pass through the media conditioning module. The cooler is positioned to supply non-heated air to both sides of the sheets of media as the sheets of media pass through the media conditioning module. The heater is positioned with respect to the cooler such that the sheets of media pass by the heater before the sheets of media pass by the cooler.

A non-coplanar calibration system exists when the calibration reference plane is offset from a document plane. Due to size, shape, or other factors attributable to a scanning system, it may not be feasible to place the calibration reference plane on the document plane, i.e., the platen glass. Lamp-fall off represents an effect that occurs as you get closer to the ends of the lamp and light energy is diminished. The profile difference between the calibration plane and the document plane in a non-coplanar system can be corrected for on a pixel by pixel basis. Illumination fall off due to the change in the distance from calibration plane to the document plane represents the main effect that must be corrected for. Also, the platen glass must be taken into account. A single calibration correction factor can be applied to each CCD element in a scanning system to account for the shift from calibration plane to document plane. Or a lumped parameter single calibration correction factor comprised of the average profile shift and the illumination shift can be used.

Systems and methods for non-coplanar calibration of a scanning system

An image processing apparatus includes a corona device with a charging grid for charging a photoreceptor to voltage levels, an exposure device for projecting an image onto the photoreceptor, a developer for applying toner to the photoreceptor, and a sensor for providing a signal in relation to current flow between the photoreceptor and the developer. An exposure device control adjusts the exposure device by setting the exposure device to an intensity level of approximately 50%. A photodetector sensor provides signals to the exposure device control in relation to the 50% intensity level in response to developing the predetermined test patches on the photoreceptor and the exposure device control adjusts the exposure device in response to the photodetector sensor signals without the use of test patches to an intensity level of approximately 100%.

An image processing apparatus having a corona device for charging a photoreceptor to voltage levels, a developer for applying toner to the photoreceptor including a sensor for providing signals in relation to current flow between the photoreceptor and the developer as a result of the developer applying toner to the photoreceptor on predetermined patches, and a corona control responsive to the signals for adjusting the corona device for charging the photoreceptor to adjusted voltage levels.

A release agent management system incorporated in an electrophotographic printing machine having a heat and pressure fuser assembly. The fuser assembly includes a heated fuser roll, a pressure roll and a wick for applying fuser oil to the surface of the heated fuser roll. The wick is moved into and out of engagement with the fuser roll and release agent material is supplied to the wick in accordance with the number of prints fused from which a print equivalency value is calculated. The print equivalency corresponds favorably to actual oil consumed. A predetermined print equivalency value is used for determining when oil is supplied to the wick and the predetermined value is varied depending on the volume of prints being made.
