A method of automatically queuing calls for later transmission in connection-oriented networks instead of blocking them when network resources are unavailable at the time the request is received, as currently done. A simple call queuing method holds up call setup messages at each switch along an end-to-end path of a network until resources become available. This simple, known queuing method suffers from poor network utilization and long call queuing delays. However, if calls that can be queued have known holding times, a call scheduling method that results in reduced call queuing delays and improved network utilization according to the present invention can be realized.

Scheduling of calls with known holding times

An address interworking system and method for an internetwork that includes a first network using first network addressing communicating via one or more internetworking gateways with a second network using second network addressing. The gateways register one or more first network addresses in the second network as first network address-encapsulated or- mapped second network addresses. Reachability information regarding the first network-encapsulated or -mapped second network addresses is then disseminated through the second network. When a communication request containing a first network destination address is received from the first network at one of the gateways, the receiving gateway performs encapsulation or mapping of the first network destination address into a first network-encapsulated or -mapped second network destination address. It then routes a communication request containing the first network-encapsulated or -mapped second network destination address through the second network based on said disseminated reachability information.

Interworking of addressing in an internetwork

A telecommunication network having a telephonic switch with a message signal controller connected to a plurality of other telephonic switches by a plurality of associated common-channel signaling links, each associated common-channel signaling link terminating at the message signaling interface at the telephonic switch and one of the plurality of other telephonic switches for transmission of telephonic signaling information.

Method and system for a scaleable virtual switch

The transmission of messages among multiple processors is controlled by the use of token and message interrupts. A token interrupt must be received from the processor sought to perform message processing. Failure to receive such a token interrupt prohibits requesting processors from making processing demands, i.e. sending a message interrupt, to the processor. Message interrupts, which may only be transmitted following receipt of a token interrupt, identify commands and user messages to be processed by a receiving processor. This permits instructions and multiple messages to be handled by a processor based on receipt of a single message interrupt. This technique also allows a processor under a temporary heavy load to defer the handling of other processing requests by delaying the transmission of a token interrupt.

Message transmission among processing units using interrupt control

Apparatus for mounting and interconnecting optical devices. The apparatus comprises generally rectangular members constructed of optical transparent material formed with recesses having sides positioned at angles with respect to a line perpendicular to a surface of the apparatus. Reflective material is selectively coated on ones of the recess sides such that a parallel coherent light beam emitted by one optical device mounted on the surface of the apparatus is reflected by the light reflective material of one recess side internally through the apparatus to the light reflective material of another recess side whereat it is reflected to optical devices mounted on the apparatus surface.

Optical device mounting apparatus

A network for data transmission between nodes interconnected by transmission paths on which a predefined data signal is continuously transmitted to sequentially reach each node. Data traffic is controlled by apparatus responsive to receiving the predefined data signal a predetermined number of times and generating node signals each varying in time in accordance with data traffic on the network to control node access thereto. Multiple nodes are enabled to mutually write data onto the network proportional to the communication network data traffic independent of the network location of the predefined data signal.

Data communication network

A data communication network comprising a plurality of nodes interconnecting transmission paths in a ring structure arranged to propagate data messages between data systems coupled to the network by the nodes in opposite directions around the network ring structure. An executive node having ring interface units interconnecting ones of the transmission paths is arranged to selectively couple a network control processor with various sectors of the transmission paths to enable the network control processor to control the traffic flow of data messages on the data communication network.

Ring packet switch

A data communication network comprising ring transmission paths (0,1) interconnecting ring interface nodes (RI1, RI2, RI3) coupled with a node processor and data systems and arranged to propagate data messages along the ring transmission paths between the data systems. Each node is arranged to detect failure of the node to propagate a data message to another node and to flush the data communication network by force reading data messages off the ring transmission paths into the blocked node processor. A node is arranged to automatically maintain and restore operation of the data communication network by loop connecting ones of the ring transmission paths together to isolate segments of the network experiencing trouble and to transfer maintenance and diagnostic data messages between ones of the looped ring transmission paths to restore ring transmission paths and nodes located in isolated segments of the network to service.

A data communication network comprising ring transmission paths (0,1) interconnecting ring interface nodes (2) arranged to propagate data along the ring transmission paths between data systems (6) coupled with the ring interface nodes. Each node has apparatus (210) coupled with ones of the ring transmission paths and data systems for receiving and temporarily storing bytes of data. Receiving structure (211) of the node enabled by predefined ones of data bytes appearing at an input of the receiving and temporarily storing apparatus derives information defining node dispose of the data and generates a disposition available signal. Transmitting structure (212) responsive to a first one of the predefined data bytes appearing at an output of the receiving and temporarily storing apparatus and enabled by the generated disposition available signal resets the disposition available signal generating structure and controls the ring interface node to receive the remaining bytes of data and disposition of the data in accordance with the derived disposition information at a transmitting rate independent of the rate of receiving incoming data.

Disclosed is a combinational logic arrangement for use in a data processor that selectively performs a plurality of bit manipulations or logic operations including shift, rotate, and insert under mask. The arrangement is controlled by a single instruction format which specifies the parameters needed for each of the operations. The logic arrangement interprets a data word as a bit string with two boundary lines that divide the string into three regions: left region, quantum region and right region. The logic circuit operates upon the left and/or right regions of an output word to either clear all bits, set all bits, propagate the sign bit of an input word or retain the information in the left and right regions of an input data word. The circuit then inserts a quantum of bits obtained from a specified region of another input data word into the output data word starting at any desired location.
