A method, system and computer program product for ingress level filtering of packets is provided. The system includes a Media Access Control (MAC) and a buffer pool that includes buffers configured to store packets. The MAC includes a memory configured to store an incoming packet and an inspection engine coupled to the memory. The inspection engine is configured to parse the incoming packet to determine a priority level of the incoming packet, determine whether there is a buffer available in the buffer pool to store the incoming packet, and allocate a buffer in the buffer pool to store the incoming packet based on the priority level of the incoming packet.

Alleviating congestion in a cable modem

A method for increasing upstream bandwidth per cable modem user in a cable communications system that includes a cable modem termination system (CMTS) and a plurality of cable modems is provided. The method permits a cable modem to transmit data to the CMTS on multiple upstream channels simultaneously using a technique called 'channel bonding.' Channel bonding allows smaller bandwidth upstream channels to be bonded together to create a larger bandwidth pipe.

Downstream synchronous multichannel (DSSM) communications are provided among a plurality of carriers, each being a completely DOCSIS&#x2122; 2.0-compliant downstream. The synchronous multichannels support communications with both DSSM-capable communications nodes and non-DSSM-capable communications nodes (e.g., legacy cable modems). Non-DSSM packets are transmitted on a single channel. DSSM packets are split into multiple pieces, which are transmitted simultaneously on all available channels. Since the physical delay variation (e.g., group delay change) across the adjacent carriers is small (on the order of a symbol time), the multiple pieces arrive at the receiving communications nodes at nearly the same time and can be reassembled with minimal buffering and no packet ordering problems. To avoid causing trouble for the non-DSSM-capable communications nodes, the packet pieces are encapsulated with a header that causes the non-DSSM-capable communications nodes to silently discard them.

Data packets transmitted over a wireless network are suppressed by hardware at the transmitting end and expanded on the receiving end. This conserves bandwidth as well as reduces the processing resource requirements in both the subscriber station and the base station. An extended header element is added to a data packet that is to be transmitted over the wireless network. The extended header element contains an index that is used along with an identifier to access a rule. The rule is used to determine which bytes are to be suppressed at the transmitter and expanded at the receiver.

A method, system, and computer program product for receiving and resequencing a plurality of data segments received on a plurality of channels of a bonding channel set, comprising deter mining if a sequence number of a received segment matches an expected sequence number. If so, the process includes forwarding the segment for further processing, incrementing the expected sequence number; and forwarding any queued packets corresponding to the expected sequence number and immediately succeeding sequence numbers less than a sequence number of annexed missing segment. If the sequence number of the received segment does not match the expected sequence number, the received segment is queued at a memory location. The address of this location is converted to a segment index. The segment index is stored in a sparse array.

An apparatus, method, and computer program for efficient rapid loss detection in a channel bonding system. A received packet having a packet sequence number (PSN) not equal to a next expected PSN is queued. A channel counter for a first channel on which the received packet was received is incremented. If all channel counters are non-zero, increment the next expected PSN to equal a lowest queued packet PSN. Forward the queued packet with the lowest queued packet PSN. Decrement a channel counter for a second channel from which the lowest PSN packet is forwarded.

Methods, systems and computer program products for dynamically modifying at least one connection parameter between a client and a server connected via a network and thereby increasing throughput rate between the server and the client are provided. The method comprises determining a first parameter value based on one or more characteristics of the network and a connection between the client and the server. The method further comprises determining whether a second parameter value encoded in a connection parameter field of the first packet received from the client is optimum based on a comparison with the first parameter value and overwriting the second parameter value with the first parameter value, if the second parameter value is not optimum.

Method and system for increasing throughput rate by dynamically modifying connection parameters

Methods and systems for estimating available bandwidth on an internet access network are presented. A method includes: (a) transmitting one or more Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) echo request packets to a device residing on the network at a first bit rate; (b) receiving one or more ICMP echo reply packets corresponding to the one or more ICMP echo request packets responsive to step (a); and (c) determining a second bit rate for the one or more ICMP echo reply packets. If the second bit rate is less than the first bit rate, available bandwidth is estimated based on the second bit rate. If the second bit rate is not less than the first bit rate, steps (a), (b) and (c) are repeated. The first bit rate is increased for each iteration, until the second bit rate is less than the first bit rate, and then available bandwidth is estimated based on the second bit rate.
