A method for performing metrology qualification of a non-destructive inspection (NDI) ultrasonic system includes performing, by the NDI ultrasonic system, an ultrasonic scanning operation on a calibration coupon. The ultrasonic scanning operation generates a scan signal. The method also includes superimposing a time-domain qualification mask on the scan signal and determining whether the scan signal is within the time-domain qualification mask. The method also includes validating a porosity sensitivity of the NDI ultrasonic system using a frequency-domain qualification mask. The method additionally includes qualifying the NDI ultrasonic system in response to the scan signal being within the time-domain qualification mask for a portion of the calibration coupon without a defect and the scan signal being above the time-domain qualification mask for another portion of the calibration coupon including the defect, and the porosity sensitivity of the NDI ultrasonic system being validated.

Metrology qualification of non-destructive inspection systems

An ultrasonic inspection system, method, and software. In one embodiment, the ultrasonic inspection system includes an ultrasonic probe that directs ultrasound waves into a structure from a front wall, and receives reflected waves to generate a response signal. The system further includes a processor that rectifies the response signal to generate a rectified signal, integrates a portion of the rectified signal within a detection time window to determine an energy sum, and generates output based on the energy sum. The detection time window is restricted to a front wall reflection and at least a portion of a near-surface dead zone following the front wall reflection.

Dead zone inspection with ultrasonic testing using signal integration

A computer-implemented method for providing on-line ultrasonically scanned images of composite parts for immediate feedback in a manufacturing environment is discussed. The scanned images are edited to indicate each deficiency that has been repaired on a previously assembled composite part. Quality assurance personnel enter data associated with each composite part and verify the data content. Repair personnel enter data associated with correcting an identified deficiency of the composite part. Historical data suitable for developing statistics and trends are stored for each type of composite part. When queries are launched, the statistical and trend data is filtered to produce reports that are displayed. That is, reports are generated that identify particular statistics and trends. The scan image and data associated with a composite part are linked together for cross-referencing and stored in a database that is accessible by client and server computers on a network. Images produced by an ultrasonic scanner(s) coupled to the network are stored for retrieval.
