A clustered pair of storage systems configured for active-active bidirectional synchronous replication expose a stretched volume over paths to both storage systems. Writes to the stretched volume received at each system are replicated to the peer system. The cluster can use a time-to-live (TTL) mechanism by which a non-preferred system continuously requests a TTL grant from the preferred system to remain in the cluster. Algorithms that reduce or avoid data unavailability are described and can include assessing the health of the systems in the cluster. An unhealthy system can trigger a one-sided polarization algorithm to notify the peer system that it is polarization winner. An improved polarization technique using a witness to decide the polarization winner includes a system adding a time delay before contacting the witness if the system is unhealthy. A control component can detect an unhealthy system and disable the active-active bidirectional synchronous replication.

Techniques for avoiding and reducing data unavailability

A method is used in managing an asynchronous and synchronous transmit priority mechanism. The method receives a plurality of replication requests in conjunction with a replication process, where the plurality of replication requests comprises at least one of a first replication request or a second replication request. A first storage system that comprises a plurality of storage devices is configured to participate in the replication process with a second storage system that comprises a plurality of storage devices. The method determines an execution order to optimize processing of the plurality of replication requests, where a first replication request execution order that optimizes processing of the at least one first replication request conflicts with optimizing processing of the at least one second replication request.

A data reduction rate may be predicted for the write request. One or more portions of memory within the storage system may be allocated based upon, at least in part, the predicted data reduction rate for the write request. The processing device is configured to identify a dataset to be scanned to generate a compression estimate for that dataset, to designate a scan criterion to be utilized in the scan, and for each of a plurality of pages of the dataset, to scan the page, where scanning the page includes performing a computation on the page to obtain a page result, determining whether or not the page result satisfies the designated scan criterion, and responsive to the page result satisfying the designated scan criterion, updating a corresponding entry of a compression estimate table for the dataset. The processing device generates the compression estimate for the dataset based at least in part on contents of the compression estimate table. The scan criterion may comprise, for example, a designated content-based signature prefix, or a designated subset inclusion characteristic defining a polynomial-based signature subspace.
