A technique for selecting portions of a multi-resolution medical image data set to be stored and the portions of the multi-resolution medical image data set to be discarded in order to reduce the overall amount of image data that is stored for each image data set. The selection is based on the clinical purpose for obtaining the medical image data. The clinical purpose for obtaining the medical image is used to select a segmentation algorithm to segment the image data into several regions based on their relevance to the purpose for obtaining the image data. A mask is created from the segmented data. The mask is used to assign data compression quality factors to corresponding regions in the image data. The image data in each region is compressed based on their assigned quality factor. The image data that is highly relevant is compressed with lossless data compression. The image data in regions of lesser relevance are compressed with lossy data compression. The image data that is of no relevance for the purpose that the image data was obtained is discarded.

Content-based image compression

A technique is provided for collaboratively processing and/or analyzing a set of image data. The technique provides for the initiation of a collaborative session by an application server. One or more collaborative workstations may join the collaborative session, providing common access to an image data set and to tools for processing and/or viewing the image data set. Operators at the collaborative workstations and/or the application server may thereby simultaneously access, process, and/or analyze the image data set. Communication between the operators via the network supporting the collaborative session may also be provided.

The text along with associated properties are packaged as a data structure along with a set of properties, and the data structure is passed through a pipeline having a series of formatters. The formatters are easily configured by the user to modify the properties of the text data structures as they flow through the pipeline prior to being rendered on a display.

Processing text for display on medical images

A method and apparatus for magnifying a portion of a digital image on a display screen in either of two ways. The first method includes a two pass scheme, where each of the passes represents an interpolation in x and y direction respectively, cubic interpolation in each direction is approximated using a one dimensional convolution filter followed by linear interpolation. The second method uses a two dimensional convolution filter first, followed by bilinear interpolation. All of the procedures that are used are accelerated using a hardware package which facilitates exceptionally fast execution.

Method and apparatus for zooming digital images

A CT Fluoro System display which includes apparatus and methods for facilitating effective performance of an interventional procedure. The apparatus and methods are generally referred to herein as partial image display, dynamic image reformation, in-room control, flat panel display, in-room display, and magnification. More particularly, an important performance parameter for a CT Fluoro System is the time to first image. Accordingly, and to reduce the time to first image, a partially reconstructed image can be displayed. In addition to fast image reconstruction, it sometimes is necessary to examine a needle position from different orientations, i.e., views. Accordingly, the present display provides dynamic image reformation wherein axial images are displayed at a very high rate and the operator may reformat the axial images and display the reformatted images in real time. Further, and to provide additional functionality and convenience for an operator, an in-room, or convenient, control including a 'reverse and forward' play command button, 'save' (or capture), 'grid display', and 'preset window/levels' functions is provided. By enabling an operator to perform these functions with the remote unit, the system is believed to be easier to use and useful information to the operator in an easily understandable format. Also, and to provide improved display, a flat panel display may be utilized. A user interface for use with the display includes a CT/i Interventional control, three message areas (hierarchical and designated as message area #1, message area #2, and message area #3), and an image control. Also, image magnification can be performed.

Apparatus and method for displaying computed tomography fluoroscopy

The present invention, in one form, includes methods and apparatus for altering the spatial characteristics of a digital image collected in a CT system using a real-time magnification algorithm. In accordance with one embodiment of the algorithm, once the digital image is collected, an enlarged image is generated by interpolating and filtering the original digital image data. In one aspect, two pass linear interpolation and one dimensional filtering is utilized to generate the enlarged image. The first pass performs interpolation in the x direction and the second pass performs interpolation in the y direction. The interpolations in the x and y directions are performed in two steps. Initially, linear interpolation is applied to the original digital image to generate interpolated data. A one dimensional convolution filter is then applied to the interpolated data. Utilizing this process, a high quality enlarged image may be generated for any integer zoom factor. In another aspect of the present invention, a two step procedure of interpolation and two dimensional filtering is utilized. The first step performs bilinear interpolation of the digital image to generate interpolated data. The interpolated data is then filtered by a two dimensional convolution filter.
