A method and system for measuring signal loss in a fiber optic cable. The tail ends of reference and test fiber optic cables are illuminated with a diffuse light. The head end of each of the reference and test fiber optic cables are positioned in a measurement area. A core imager captures an image of the core of each head-end while it is in the measurement area. Reference and test radiant fluxes emitted from the reference and test head-ends are determined from the respective core images. The relative signal loss of the test fiber optic cable is then determined by comparing the test radiant flux to the reference radiant flux.

Relative mode transmission loss measurement of a connectorized fiber optic cable

A method, system, and computer program product for determining a core-to-ferrule offset of a ferrule for a fiber optic connector. A reference ferrule is physically aligned with a core imager by positioning the reference ferrule so that edges of the reference ferrule in a plurality of profile images are aligned with fiducial markers in the images. The reference ferrule is incrementally rotated about its longitudinal center access, a core image captured at each rotational angle, and a reference core-to-ferrule offset determined based on the core images. A test ferrule is physically aligned with the core imager by positioning the test ferrule so that edges of the test ferule are aligned with the edges of the reference ferrule in a plurality of profile images. The core-to-ferrule offset of the test ferrule is then determined based on an offset between the test and reference cores in a composite core image.

Precision non-contact core imaging of fiber optic assemblies

The hybrid measurement system includes an evanescent prism coupling spectroscopy (EPCS) sub-system and a light-scattering polarimetry (LSP) sub-system. The EPCS sub-system includes an EPCS light source system optically coupled to an EPCS detector system through an EPCS coupling prism. The LSP sub-system includes an LSP light source optically coupled to an optical compensator, which in turn is optically coupled to a LSP detector system via a LSP coupling prism. A support structure supports the EPCS and LSP coupling prisms to define a coupling prism assembly, which supports the two prisms at a measurement location. Stress measurements made using the EPCS and LSP sub-systems are combined to fully characterize the stress properties of a transparent chemically strengthened substrate. Methods of processing the EPCS and LSP measurements and enhanced configurations of the EPCS and LPS sub-systems to improve measurement accuracy are also disclosed.

Enhanced hybrid systems and methods for characterizing stress in chemically strengthened transparent substrates

Gradient-index (GRIN) lens fabrication employing laser pulse width duration control, and related components, systems, and methods are disclosed. GRIN lenses can be fabricated from GRIN rods by controlling the pulse width emission duration of a laser beam emitted by a laser to laser cut the GRIN rod, as the GRIN rod is disposed in rotational relation to the laser beam. Controlling laser pulse width emission duration can prevent or reduce heat accumulation in the GRIN rod during GRIN lens fabrication. It is desired that the end faces of GRIN lenses are planar to facilitate light collimation, easy bonding or fusing of the GRIN lens to optical fibers to reduce optical losses, polishing to avoid spherical aberrations, and/or cleaning the end faces when disposed in a fiber optic connector, as non-limiting examples.

Gradient-index (GRIN) lens fabrication employing laser pulse width duration control, and related components, systems, and methods

Glass inspection systems are provided for detecting particles and defects in or on a glass sheet or glass ribbon (). The system is mounted so that the surface () to be inspected is in the object plane of a reflective lens (). The lens images a thin stripe area, long in the direction tangent to the lens circumference and short in the radial direction, onto a linescan camera (). A line illuminator () can be mounted so that it illuminates the stripe area. To perform the inspection, the system is moved with respect to the glass in the direction perpendicular to the long axis of the stripe, either by moving the system over the glass or by moving the glass while the system is fixed. Image information is collected by the linescan camera during this motion and assembled into an image.

Inspection systems for glass sheets

A distortion measurement and inspection system is presented. In one embodiment, a vision system is implemented. The vision system performs dual focal plane imaging where simultaneous imaging of two focal planes is simultaneously performed on a sample substrate and a reference substrate to determine distortion. In addition, a highly reflective background is implemented to provide for more resolution during distortion measurement.

A transmission which requires only a single source to transmit is generated in accordance with a code which is binary (a pulse train having two levels which produces a specific harmonic line spectrum). The pulses are generated by pulse time modulation of the position and duration of pulses in a sweep which extends to the upper end of the spectrum.

A seismic array containing a large number of seismic sensors, which may be optical hydrophones, has successive sections, each of which contains a subarray of sensor channels, interconnected by a fiber optic signal transmission line via telemetry modules. Synchronizing signals for initiating successive scans of the sensors in the array and timing the multiplexing of the channels are transmitted along the signal transmission line from the tail end of the line through telemetry modules to the head end. Equipment for receiving, demultiplexing and processing the seismic data is provided at the head end. The array may be towed as a seismic streamer and the head end equipment located topside on the towing vessel. The telemetry modules provide hybrid optical/electrical operation such that array sections including the optical hydrophones and fiber optic links are coupled to each other exclusively by electrical connectors. Submultiplexing of each subarray of sensors (hydrophones) is carried out by the telemetry module under control of scan synchronizing and timing signals so as to avoid the need for anti-aliasing filters and sample and hold circuits associated with the hydrophones in the array, while improving the signal to noise ratio of the seismic data signals derived from the array, in spite of shot or photon noise and also minimizing timing skew errors.

Sensor system with time division multiplexing telemetry

When a multimode optical fiber is deformed in accordance with an input signal to be sensed, light from lower order core modes is coupled to higher order core modes. A lens assembly is provided which separates the light in the higher order core modes from the light remaining in the lower order core modes. A spatial filter in the lens assembly enables the lens or lenses therein to couple the separated modes to two different output fibers with high efficiency and low coupling loss. The two signals in the output fibers are processed so that the common components which constitute noise are cancelled, while the signal components are additively combined and appear at the system's output so as to provide a highly sensitive, low noise fiber optic sensor system.
