In the event of loss of connection () between an access point () and a data network (), the access point () transmits instructions to a data processing device () connected to the access point () to cause the data processing device () to re-establish connection to the data network () by another means. These instructions cause the data processing device to scan for beacon signals from further wireless access points, and establish connection () to the data network () through a wireless access point () identified in the scanning process.

Restoration of network access

A wireless-enabled user terminal () is configured to detect the absence of a connection () between a wireless network router () and a core network (). The terminal () uses data by which the router () is identified to emulate the router () and set up an alternative link () to the network () so that other terminals () previously connecting to the network () through the router () can continue to connect to the network () through the terminal () and alternative link () using the same network identities as they did through the router () until a connection () between the router () and network () is installed or restored.

Access between a data terminaland a data networkby way of a first wireless-enabled access pointis restored after a primary connectionbetween the first access point and the data network is lost by having the access pointscan for a further wireless-enabled access pointand establishing a wireless connection between the first access pointand the further access pointsuch that the data terminalsetc can connect to the data network by way of the access pointsand the wireless connection between them.
