A high strength sieve which is lightweight and durable without having to add springs, and without requiring a high level of force to effect adjustment of the louvers. The high strength sieve utilizes hollow tubes to support the louvers. Providing hollow tubes (i.e., rather than solid wires) allows for larger diameter holes to be used in the frame. This provides for increased bearing surfaces, as well as provides for better tolerances. This reduces the movement of the tubes within the holes. Preferably, the tubes are mounted in the frame through holes which are extruded, thereby providing for increased bearing surfaces and a tighter fit. The extruded holes also provide a natural lead-in for the insertion of the tubes (i.e., during assembly of the sieve). Alternatively, solid wires can be provided extending through the extruded holes instead of hollow tubes.

High strength sieve

A single vane slat design for use in a sieve or chaffer of a harvester combine. The single vane slat has a weld pocket, preferably on its bottom surface, for receiving a wire on a frame. The single vane slat may be formed of a 26 gage material, and may be attached to the wire using two small welds. The weld material is configured to flow into the weld pocket upon being welded, and achieve direct and incidental contact between the wire and the slat. The weld pocket of the slat is configured such that the slat is self-fixturing to the wire, which lends to the ability to weld the slats to the wires while fixed in the frame. This facilitates accommodating a large number of frame types and sizes.

Single vane slat

A slat and a sieve assembly. The sieve assembly comprises a frame, a slat supported by the frame, and a rotational drive mechanism supported by the frame. In some constructions and in some aspects, the slat extends at least 180&#xb0; about an axis and has a cross-section having a uniform radius in relation to the axis. The slat includes spaced finger-like indentations being defined on an edge of the slat. The slat is couplable to the rotational drive mechanism for rotation about the axis. In some constructions and in some aspects, the rotational drive mechanism includes a pinion connected to the end of the slat, and a drive shaft including a worm gear engaging the pinion and rotatably supported by the frame to rotate about a drive axis. In some constructions and in some aspects, the slat may include a cross-section having a first adjustment cavity and a second adjustment cavity. The sieve assembly may also include a plurality of slats extending substantially parallel to one another with a space being defined between adjacent slats.
