A method for shifting a multi-speed transmission of a marine propulsion device from a first gear being engaged to a second gear being engaged by selectively filling a first clutch and a second clutch with a fluid. The method includes operating the marine propulsion device with the second gear disengaged and controlling the second clutch to perform a first prefill in which fluid is injected into the second clutch to partially fill the second clutch while the second gear remains disengaged. The method further includes receiving, after the first prefill, a request to shift from the first gear to the second gear and subsequently increasing a pressure in the second clutch to cause the second gear to engage and decreasing a pressure in the first clutch to cause the first gear to disengage to thereby shift the multi-speed transmission.

Systems and methods for shifting a multi-speed transmission

A method for maintaining a marine vessel at a target position in a body of water, the method being carried out by a processing system and including: estimating at least one roughness condition of the body of water based on measurements related to an attitude of the marine vessel; calculating a desired linear velocity based on a difference between an actual position of the marine vessel and the target position; filtering an actual linear velocity of the marine vessel based on the roughness conditions; and operating a propulsion system of the marine vessel to move the marine vessel to minimize a difference between the desired linear velocity and the filtered actual linear velocity. A method of controlling a steering system on a marine vessel includes, in response to receiving input to engage a quick steer mode, employing a reduced steering ratio to translate a change in position of a steering wheel to a desired change in steering angle of a marine drive. A vessel speed of the marine vessel is compared to a threshold vessel speed. Upon determining that the vessel speed exceeds the threshold vessel speed, an output limit in a direction of travel of the marine vessel is determined and the marine drive is controlled based on the output limit. A steering actuator associated with the marine drive is controlled based on the reduced steering ratio and the change in position of the steering wheel.

Systems and methods for steering a marine vessel

A method for shifting a multi-speed transmission for transmitting rotation between an input shaft and an output shaft for a marine vessel. The method includes providing a multi-speed transmission having first and second gears engaged by actuating first and second clutches, and providing first and second pressure sensors that measure first and second pressures within the first and second clutches, respectively. The method further includes performing a first shift from the first gear to the second gear by de-actuating the first clutch a first delay after the second clutch is actuated, then measuring the first and second pressures and determining a first shift pressure at which the first and second pressures are substantially equal while performing the first shift. The method further includes comparing the first shift pressure to a first pressure threshold range and adjusting the first delay when the first shift pressure is outside the first pressure threshold range.

Multi-speed transmissions and methods for shifting multi-speed transmissions for marine vessels

A method of controlling a steering system on a marine vessel includes, in response to receiving a user input to engage a quick steer mode, employing a reduced steering ratio to translate positions of a steering wheel to desired steering angles of a marine drive. A vessel speed of a marine vessel is determined and then compared to a threshold vessel speed. An output limit is determined to prevent the marine vessel from further exceeding the threshold vessel speed while the quick steer mode is engaged. The marine drive is automatically controlled based on the output limit and a steering actuator associated with the marine drive is controlled based on the reduced steering ratio.

A method is disclosed for controlling heading of a marine vessel having a steerable component coupled thereto, the steerable component being rotatable to affect a direction of movement of the vessel. The method is carried out by a control module and includes accepting a command to initiate a control mode in which the vessel's heading is to be maintained at a desired heading. The method includes receiving a current heading of the vessel and determining a heading error between the current heading and the desired heading. The method also includes determining if the vessel is on-plane or off-plane. In response to the vessel being off-plane, the method includes controlling the steerable component to rotate by at least a predetermined correction amount away from a starting position in a direction that will cause the vessel to rotate to reduce the heading error, and subsequently to rotate back toward the starting position.

A method for maintaining a marine vessel at a global position and/or heading includes receiving measurements related to vessel attitude and estimating water roughness conditions based on the measurements. A difference between the vessel's actual global position and the target global position and/or a difference between the vessel's actual heading and the target heading are determined. The method includes calculating a desired linear velocity based on the position difference and/or a desired rotational velocity based on the heading difference. The vessel's actual linear velocity and/or actual rotational velocity are filtered based on the roughness conditions. The method also includes calculating vessel movements that will minimize the linear velocity difference and/or rotational velocity difference and carrying out the calculated movements.

The method is carried out by a control module and includes determining a load of the engine, determining speed of the engine, and determining a pitch of the marine vessel. The method includes switching between a first gear ratio and a second gear ratio of the transmission based on the engine load, the engine speed, and the vessel pitch.

A minimum speed demand value and hold period are then determined. Method and system for controlling a marine drive during panic shift

A method for setting an engine speed of an internal combustion engine in a marine propulsion device of a marine propulsion system to an engine speed setpoint includes determining the engine speed setpoint based on an operator demand and predicting a position of a throttle valve that is needed to achieve the engine speed setpoint. The method also includes determining a feed forward signal that will move the throttle valve to the predicted position, and after moving the throttle valve to the predicted position, adjusting the engine speed with a feedback controller so as to obtain the engine speed setpoint. An operating state of the marine propulsion system is also determined. Depending on the operating state, the method may include determining limits on an authority of the feedback controller to adjust the engine speed and/or determining whether the operator demand should be modified prior to determining the engine speed setpoint.

Systems and methods for setting engine speed in a marine propulsion device

A traction control system is for a marine vessel. The traction control system comprises a first internal combustion engine that causes rotation of a first propulsor to thereby propel the marine vessel in the water. A second internal combustion engine causes rotation of a second propulsor to thereby propel the marine vessel in water. A sensor senses a change in operation of the first internal combustion engine that is indicative of a loss of traction between the first propulsor and the water. A control circuit is programmed to temporarily slow rotation of the first propulsor when the sensor senses the change in operation of the first internal combustion engine, thereby allowing the first propulsor to regain traction with the water. When the control circuit slows rotation, the control circuit is further programmed to temporarily slow rotation of the second internal combustion engine, thereby preventing unintended movement of the marine vessel.

Traction control systems and methods for marine vessels

Systems and methods are for maneuvering a marine vessel having a plurality of steerable propulsion devices. The plurality of propulsion devices are controlled to achieve a lateral movement by controlling the steering orientation of port and starboard propulsion devices so that forward thrusts provided by the port and starboard propulsion devices intersect at or forwardly of a center of turn of the marine vessel. One of the port and starboard propulsion devices is operated to provide a forward thrust and the other of the port and starboard propulsion devices is operated to provide a reverse thrust so that the lateral movement is achieved and a resultant yaw component is applied on the marine vessel. An intermediate propulsion device is controlled to apply an opposing yaw component on the marine vessel that counteracts the resultant yaw component.
