A radiation-curable composition is disclosed. An fluorinated oligomer is combined with a diluent monomer and a photoinitiator to form the radiation-curable coating composition. The fluorinated oligomer is substantially free of isocyanate groups. The radiation-curable compositions provide a suitable coating for substrates, are resistant to penetration by water and liquid hydrocarbons, retain their physical properties over a wide temperature range and exhibit immeasurably low surface friction properties.

Optical fiber coatings are disclosed having excellent ribbon stripping and adhesion behavior. The coatings are radiation-curable. The excellent stripping and adhesion behavior can be achieved by several means which include by use of additives, by use of radiation-curable oligomers having higher molecular weight, or by use of coatings having certain thermal properties. Combination of means can be employed. Stripping behavior can be measured by crack propagation and fiber friction measurements.

This invention provides an improved coating composition for glass substrates that comprises a tetrasubstituted compound. The introduction of a tetrasubstituted compound in a coating composition for a glass substrate, and in particular an optical fiber, acts to delay the rate of deterioration of the glass or optical fiber due to moisture, and improves adhesion between the glass substrate and the coating composition. The introduction of a tetrasubtituted compound into a polymeric coating composition also improves the interlayer adhesion when more than one coating is applied to a glass substrate. This invention further relates to an outer primary coating composition or matrix material that comprises an acid functional ethylenically unsaturated monomer. This invention also provides an improved coated glass substrate having a decreased rate of deterioration due to moisture, improved adhesion between the glass substrate and the coating composition and between the various coatings, wherein the coating composition comprises a tetrasubstituted compound.

Provided is a ribbon assembly containing a plurality of coated optical glass fibers and a matrix material which binds the plurality of coated optical glass fibers together. At least one of the coated optical glass fibers contains an ink coating or colored outer primary coating. At least one of the ink coating, the colored outer primary coating, or the matrix material contains a phospholipid.

Radiation-curable compositions are disclosed which, after cure, are substantially non-yellowing. The compositions are particularly tailored for coating and bundling of optical fibers. A first preferred composition is based on a polyether-type of oligomer diluted with reactive diluents. Isocyanurate structures are included in the composition to raise Tg. A second preferred composition is based on fatty oil comprising (meth)acrylate groups and bisphenol A derivatives comprising (meth)acrylate groups. Photoinitiators can be included to increase cure speed. The formulations do not include material amounts of ingredients which tend to cause yellowing or, in theory, extended conjugation in the cured compositions.

Protective materials for optical fibers which do not substantially discolor

Radiation-curable inner and outer primary optical fiber coatings are disclosed having both fast cure speed and reduced rates of yellowing. The compositions comprise particular photoinitiators and UV absorbers which are used in amounts to provide the combination of properties. The UV absorber can have ethylenic unsaturation. Outer primary coatings can be formulated to screen inner primary coatings and have fast cure speed.

A radiation-curable composition for optical fiber coatings comprising about 10 wt. % to about 90 wt. % of at least one radiation-curable oligomer (A), about 10 wt. % to about 90 wt. % of at least one radiation-curable monomer diluent (B), and an effective amount of at least one photoinitiator (C) represented by formula (1): ##STR1## wherein Ar.sup.1 to Ar.sup.3 are aromatic groups which may have one or more substitution groups.
