A general purpose scan converter for converting video signals from one scan rate to another scan rate. The scan converter accepts NTSC, PAL, EGA, VGA, or other inputs in standard video formats and convert them to be displayed on a monitor. Several modes of operation including continuous frame grabbing, grab and hold image, and dynamic scaling are provided. In addition, window sizing and window location options are under user control. The input sources for video may be selected, and a robust voltage controlled oscillator is provided for timing. The converter device operates continuously in real time and provides a high resolution output signal to a monitor.

A video normalizer corrects for irregularities characteristic of video display monitor screens, so as to provide accurate and consistent light levels and color intensities. The normalizer is especially useful for computer controlled editing of video data for the graphics industry. The video normalizer includes a photo sensor for measuring the monitor light output at various locations on the monitor CRT screen, and digital circuitry for providing a correction value for each portion of the monitor screen, with the correction value being applied to the output of a conventional colorgraphics board (video display card) which drives the monitor.

A thirty-two bit frame buffer provides real time conversion of CYMK color data to RGB color data for display on a video monitor. The frame buffer operates at a video rate of 100 mHz and includes pipelined arithmetic using look up tables for some of the CYMK to RGB conversion steps. Also provided are look up tables providing gamma correction and pixel-by-pixel selection of CYMK to RGB conversion, to allow display of an RGB window in a CYMK information display.
