A system and method for adding hyperlinked information to a television broadcast in which an interactive content icon is used. The broadcast material is analyzed and one or more regions within a frame are identified. Additional information can be associated with a region, and can be transmitted in encoded form, using timing information to identify the frame with which the information is associated. A receiver displays the annotation information associated with the video signal in response to a viewer request on a frame by frame basis. The interactive content icon can be used to inform a viewer of the presence of hyperlinked information, for teaching the viewer how to use the system, and for informing the viewer about the hyperlinked information.

Method and apparatus for interaction with hyperlinks in a television broadcast

The present invention comprises a system and method for presenting large numbers of items on a display screen. According to one aspect of the present invention, information is harvested from a plurality of sites and over a plurality of times and aggregated into a single item set. According to another aspect of the present invention, this information is supplemented by data derived from sorting and classification tasks performed by humans. According to another aspect of present invention, this information is used to derive similarities between items and to derive a hierarchical classification of items into a hierarchical set of categories. According to another aspect of the present invention, one or more series of catalog displays are created which display these items arranged by different criteria and at different scales.

System and method for interacting with item catalogs

A confluence calendar system and method is provided having a user platform with a user calendar having a number of events of importance to the user. Each of the user events can include date information, location information, and other event detail information. In addition, a serendipity server is provided for generating serendipitous events, based on information received from the user and third parties. The serendipity server sends the serendipitous events to the user for viewing, and for adding the serendipitous event to the user's calendar.

A system and method of adding hyperlinked information to a television broadcast in which an interactive content icon is used. The system comprising a video source and an encoder that produces a transport stream in communication with the video source, an annotation source, a data packet stream generator that produces encoded annotation data packets in communication with the annotation source and the encoder, and a multiplexer system in communication with the encoder and the data packet stream generator. The encoder provides timestamp information to the data packet stream generator and the data packet stream generator synchronizes annotation data from the annotation source with a video signal from the video source in response to the timestamp information. The multiplexer generates a digital broadcast signal that includes an augmented transport stream from the transport stream and the encoded data packets. A receiver displays the annotation information associated with the video signal in response to a viewer request on a frame by frame basis. A viewer can respond interactively to the material, including performing commercial transactions, by using a backchannel that is provided for interactive communication. The interactive content icon can be used to inform a viewer of the presence of hyperlinked information, for teaching the viewer how to use the system, and for informing the viewer about the hyperlinked information.

An electrostatic holding device for holding semiconductor wafers and similar materials during microelectronic device manufacturing operations. It has a circular, electrically conductive wafer support having a rounded periphery; an annular border region; and a flat, concentric, raised, central plateau having an electrically conductive top surface. The plateau has a tapered circumferential edge which extends down to the annular border region. A nonelectrically conductive coating is on the rounded periphery, the border region and the tapered edge which extends to, but does not cover, the conductive top surface of the central plateau such that an the coating is coplanar with the conductive top surface of the central plateau. A removable dielectric sheet overlies the top surface of the central plateau, the coating on the tapered edge and the coating on the border region. The dielectric sheet is releasably attached to the top surface of the central plateau, the coating on the tapered edge and the coating on the border region such that the release is by the application of peeling forces. A uniform electric field across the dielectric layer holds a wafer on the support via the dielectric sheet.

A microfilm reader is provided which not only permits an operator to visually examine previously created images, stored on microfilm, but also to create a digitized representation of the image being viewed. The reader includes an opto-mechanical system for displaying a selected image and also for directing the image to a digitizing sensor. The sensor is coupled to electronic circuitry for storing the digitized representation either in black and white form or with a gray scale. The contents of the storage unit can be accessed a microcomputer coupled to the reader for purposes of manipulating the digitized representation or for transmitting it to another display or an output device, such as a facsimile machine.

A continuous motion imaging system having a focusing mechanism for linescan imaging. Carriage apparatus connected to a continuous motion device moves a platen which holds the imaging media. A flexure connection between the carriage and the platen, coupled with a precise rail and bearing structure, provides for precision focus at the linescan position over the axis between the bearings.

The control includes a memory storing information corresponding to a plurality of patterns desired to be displayed, and a pattern selector switch for providing an output for application to the memory corresponding to a desired pattern to be displayed. The memory is responsive at least to the output of the pattern selector switch for supplying an output to the lights in accordance with the pattern selected for enabling energization of the lights according to the pattern selected.
