The disclosure provides a chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) polypeptide having an antigen binding domain comprising an extracellular lectin which specifically binds to glycoproteins expressed on the surface of target cells. More specifically, methods are provided for inhibiting or suppressing viral replication in an infected host cell by administering compounds that interfere with the binding of C-X-C chemokines to C-X-C chemokine receptors. Such methods are advantageous for treating viral infections such as human immunodefeciency virus infections.
