A cartridge assembly for a surgical stapling system includes a cartridge, a sled assembly, a drive beam, and a knife. The sled assembly is configured to drive fasteners through the cartridge. The drive beam defines a cam slot and is positioned to drive the sled assembly along the cartridge. The knife is supported by the sled assembly and has a blade and a guide pin that extends from the knife. The guide pin is configured to cam along the cam slot of the drive beam to facilitate pivoting movement of the knife relative to the sled assembly and to enable the blade to move relative to the cartridge for selectively cutting tissue.

Apparatus for endoscopic procedures

A surgical device includes a jaw assembly, an articulating assembly and a drive shaft. The jaw assembly includes first and second jaws. The articulating assembly is removably coupled to a proximal end of the jaw assembly and includes a distal joint member, a proximal joint member, and a pivot pin. The pivot pin is fixedly coupled to the distal joint member and is rotatably coupled to the proximal joint member. The jaw assembly and the distal joint member together define a first longitudinal axis. The proximal joint member defines a second longitudinal axis. The drive shaft includes a gear element that is meshingly engaged with a pivoting gear element that is fixedly coupled to the pivot pin. Longitudinal movement of the first drive shaft pivots the jaw assembly relative to the proximal joint member about a pivot axis defined by the pivot pin.

A surgical stapling instrument includes an end effector, an adapter assembly, and a rotation lockout assembly. The end effector includes a staple cartridge assembly and an anvil assembly that are coupled to a proximal housing and movably positioned relative to one another. The staple cartridge assembly has a drive beam and a sled. The sled carries a knife that is rotatably supported on the sled. The drive beam is configured to move the knife relative to the drive beam. The adapter assembly has an elongated shaft that extends distally to an articulating assembly. The articulating assembly includes distal and proximal joint members coupled by a pin to articulate the end effector. The rotation lockout assembly prevents rotation of the end effector during a firing of the surgical stapling instrument.

An end effector assembly for use in a surgical robotic system includes an anvil assembly and a staple cartridge assembly operably coupled to the anvil assembly. The staple cartridge assembly includes a chassis defining an elongate channel therein, a staple cartridge body configured for removable receipt in the elongate channel of the chassis, and a shipping wedge removably coupled to the staple cartridge body and at least partially covering a tissue-contacting surface of the staple cartridge body. The shipping wedge has a machine-readable medium thereon that stores a characteristic of the staple cartridge body.
