A method performed in an electronic device that connects via a USB connector to an accessory that supports multiple different operating modes. The method comprises: in response to successful authentication of the accessory after an initial connection, configuring an accessory usage setting of the electronic device to correspond to the accessory's default operational mode. In response to a request to change the operational mode of the accessory to a second operational mode: communicating to the accessory, over the signal/communication lines of the USB, mode identifying information corresponding to the second operational mode; generating a voltage level change on an ID line of the USB connector to communicate to the accessory that a change in the accessory's present operational mode is being triggered, where the accessory is designed to change to the second operational mode when a pulse or voltage level change is detected on the ID line.

An electronic device comprises: a memory having one or more class capabilities look-up tables; a communication port that enables connection of the electronic device to a device interface mechanism of a cradle accessory; an accessory authentication mechanism including configuration logic that, responsive to detection of an electrical coupling of the electronic device to the cradle accessory: initiates an authentication protocol that authenticates the cradle as an approved device for communicatively connecting with the electronic device; receives, from the cradle, N device status bits having a first set of M class bits that identify a class type of the cradle and a second set of P capabilities bits that identify which capabilities available to devices in that class type are supported by the cradle; and activates, on the electronic device and cradle, the one or more specific capabilities supported by the cradle, based on the class type and associated capabilities.

A highly versatile interface that is capable of digital and audio signal coupling is provided. The interface comprises contacts () that are used to couple both audio and digital signals, and separate contacts () that are used initiate and negotiate signaling mode transitions. Transitions can be effected without creating glitches, e.g., audible noise, in audio signals that are being coupled through the interface.

An electrical module (125) is for mounting upon a circuit board (104). During circuit assembly, the electrical module (125) is placed upon a breakaway portion (117) of the circuit board (104) and a bracket assembly (103) is mounted to the circuit board (104) so as to position the electrical module (125). At the conclusion of circuit assembly, final assembly is initiated and the breakaway portion (117) is removed and the circuit board (104) is mounted into a housing (105). Preferably, the electrical module (125) is in direct contact with the housing (105) so as to maximize heat transfer.

The bidirectional clocking apparatus provides automatic sensing of whether a reference clock being generated by another circuit needs to be divided down to a lower frequency. If this is true, the clock is divided down to a lower frequency and sent out to other circuits requiring the lower frequency clock. If the lower frequency clock is already generated from another circuit, the apparatus accepts this clock for use by other circuits. Only one terminal is required for either sourcing or accepting this lower frequency clock signal.

The present invention encompasses a pager and radiotelephone apparatus (100) having a radio pager section (102) and a cellular radiotelephone section (104) into one unit. The apparatus (100) may automatically receive a plurality of pages while the cellular radiotelephone section (104) is on, communicating a cellular telephone call, or off and unattended. The received pages are stored in the pager section (102) until the apparatus user acknowledges their receipt by a keystroke. The pages are then transferred to the radiotelephone section (104) and stored in non-volatile memory for later use.

A mobile radiotelephone (120) includes a microcomputer (220), speakerphone control circuitry (106) and mobile radio (112). Mobile radio (112) includes a transmitter (242), receiver (244) and a duplexer (243) for coupling the transmitter (242) and receiver (243) to the mobile antenna. In the transmit voice path, speakerphone control circuitry (106) includes switch (201), variable gain amplifier (202), compressor amplifier (203), switch (204), variable gain amplifier (205), and two registers (212-213). In the receive voice path, speakerphone control circuitry (106) includes variable gain amplifier (232), expander amplifier (233), switch (234), variable gain amplifier (235), switch (236) and two registers (216-217). Speakerphone control circuitry (106) also includes rectifier/filter (224), a companding analog-to-digital (A/D) converter (225), two latches (218-219), rectifier/filter (226) and two registers (214-215). Microcomputer (220) accesses registers (212-217) by means of a data bus (222) including address, control and data lines. Microcomputer (220) utilizes digital samples from A/D converter (225) to continuously generate and store in its memory an envelope signal and a valley signal for the transmit and receive voice paths. In order to determine when to switch gain between the voice paths, microcomputer (220) compares the envelope signal to the valley signal to detect the presence of voice signals and, if the voice signals are detected for a pre-selected time, the gain of the path in which voice signals have been detected is increased and the gain of the other path is decreased.
