A user interface () for a portable electronic device () is configured to transition from a first state to a second state to present a plurality of mode-based user actuation targets to a user. The user interface () includes a segmented electro-optical device () configured to open and close shutters, thereby revealing and hiding the user actuation targets. The user interface includes a first polarizer () disposed above the segmented electro-optical device () and a colored reflective polarizer () disposed beneath the segmented electro-optical device. The colored reflective polarizer (), which may include a colored dichroic polarizer () and a reflective polarizer (), causes the user interface () to exhibit a predetermined color.

Colored morphing apparatus for an electronic device

A segmented optical shutter () is used with a high-resolution display () to provide a dynamic user interface () for a portable electronic device (). To reduce optical interference corresponding to a correlation function for transmitted light occurring between the photospacers () in the segmented optical shutter () and the black matrix (), the photospacers () are disposed along a light transmitting substrate () of the segmented optical shutter () in a quasi-random arrangement. The quasi-random arrangement, which may include varying the horizontal and vertical placement of the photospacers (), repeating asymmetrical subsections of photospacer configurations, varying the size or shape of the photospacers (), or combinations thereof, misaligns the photospacers () relative to the black matrix () or other elements to reduce optical interference and moir&#xe9; patterns that may otherwise be perceptible to a user.

Field effect mode electro-optical device having a quasi-random photospacer arrangement

A capacitive sensor () for a touch sensitive electronic device () includes at least one graphic () visible to a user. The graphic () is configured so as to be non-electrically interfering with the electrode array of the capacitive sensor (). A substrate (), configured to transmit light, has a layer of capacitive sensor material () deposited thereon. The layer of capacitive sensor material () is electrically conductive and pellucid. A layer of selectively disposed electrically conductive material () is then electrically coupled to the layer of capacitive sensor material (). The layer of selectively disposed electrically conductive material () is arranged as a graphic, which may be a logo, brand, or other mark. The layer of selectively disposed electrically conductive material () has a reflectivity that is greater than the layer of capacitive sensor material () so as to make the graphic () visible to a user.
