An apparatus for use in exercising in water, preferably deep water running, includes a shoe that is configured to be worn by the user. The shoe includes a plurality of drag-generating elements attached to and extending from each side of said shoe for generating drag forces on the shoe during movement in water. The drag-generating elements generate more drag for movement of said shoe in a rearward direction than in a forward direction and are sized and positioned to simulate the forces on the user's foot arising from land-based running.

A method and system for automatically detecting heart sounds. The sound system receives sound data corresponding to beats of the heart. The sound system analyzes the sound data to detect the presence of a heart sound within the beats. The sound system then outputs an indication of the heart sounds that were detected. The sound system may use ECG data to identify various locations (e.g., R peak) within a beat and use those locations to assist in the detection of heart sounds.

A defibrillator having infrared communication capability is provided. The present invention provides an apparatus for adjusting and fixing default printhead-to-media spacing in a printer having a frame and a printhead-carrying carriage, the apparatus including an elongate, laterally extending carriage rod along which the carriage moves during printing, and selectively adjustable and fixable compliant structure mounting the rod on the frame, and operable to effect positional and fixable adjustment of the rod relative to the frame to establish a desired default printhead-to-media spacing.

A liquid crystal display (LCD) device temperature compensation control system and associated methodologies that controls the contrast voltage provided to the LCD device based on the ambient temperature to enable the LCD to display data beyond the normal, manufacturer-specified operational temperature range. The LCD contrast ratio is dependent upon ambient temperature and contrast voltage. The invention controls the contrast voltage supplied to the LCD device such that it operates in either a standard or extended operating range based on ambient temperature to achieve an optimum contrast ratio. The invention may also adjust the frame rate and/or data inversion state of the displayed data.

A digital displacement encoder that includes a mechanical actuator constructed and arranged to be displaced to one of a null and a plurality of activation positions in response to an externally-provided force. Also included is a conductive member constructed and arranged to be positioned to one of a plurality of intermediate positions in response to the change in position of the mechanical actuator. A contact array comprising a plurality of activation signal contacts is fixedly disposed proximate to the conductive member. Also included is a digital signal generator comprising one or more electrical circuits electrically coupled to the plurality of activation signal contacts, and one more terminals at which output signals are provided. The conductive member electrically contacts a predetermined one or more of the plurality of activation signal contacts when the mechanical actuator is in each of the plurality of positions. At each of the intermediate positions, the conductive member electrically alters the electrical circuits that include the contacted signal contacts to cause a change in output signals. Preferably, the conductive member is comprised of a conductive elastomeric material. Also, it is preferable that a biasing element be included to urge the conductive member toward its null position. The digital signal generator is a voltage pull-up circuit, although any type of circuit may be used. In one embodiment, the digital signal generator provides a plurality of output signals having a nominal state responsive to the mechanical actuator being in the null position, and a plurality of activation states each responsive to the mechanical actuator being in one of the plurality of activation positions. Preferably, the signal contacts are traces on the printed circuit board. The mechanical actuator may be a rocker button, wheel or slide, among others.

A method and apparatus for a test pattern used in the alignment of an ink-jet pen which deposits fixer fluid, or other clear ink precursor fluid, on print media uses the change in reflectivity caused by overprinting a series of positional-calibration indicia with colorant to obtain data with respect to deviations in a carriage-scan x-axis and a paper scan y-axis. Thus the invention measures distances between pens or nozzles.

A battery pack performance component detection system and method that identifies performance components of an installed battery pack which may be one of a number of battery packs each having a different performance component configuration. A performance component may be any operational component implemented in a battery pack other than the cells, that directly or indirectly affects the ability of a battery pack to support the power source requirements dictated by the operational mode of the battery-powered device. A performance component configuration is the particular combination of such performance components implemented in a battery pack. The battery packs have electrical and mechanical interfaces that are functionally interchangeable and include distinguishing feature(s) in either or both aspects of the battery interface that are uniquely associated with, and indicative of, the performance components implemented in the individual battery packs. The detection system includes one or more sensors appropriately configured and arranged to detect such distinguishing feature(s) and, based on the presence or absence of the feature(s), determines which performance components are implemented in the installed battery pack. The detection system may determine, for example, whether a battery pack installed in a battery-powered device is a commonly available industry standard battery pack having a first performance component configuration that is capable of supporting a first power source requirement, or a customized battery pack having a second performance component configuration capable of supporting a second power source requirement of the device. As used herein, an &ldquo;industry standard&rdquo; battery pack is any battery pack that generally is commonly available, whether it be due to a governmental regulation, industry-established standard, marketplace dominance or otherwise. In one application, the system determines whether battery pack installed in a portable defibrillator has a thermal fuse which limits the current draw, or a customized battery pack that does not.

System and method for detecting performance components of a battery pack

A battery capacity tester method and apparatus are provided. The battery capacity tester determines the present internal battery impedance by measuring terminal voltages during successive applications of a known load, each load drawing a predetermined current from the battery. This calculated internal battery impedance is used to determine battery capacity based on a precharacterization of the battery that establishes a relationship between the internal battery impedance and the remaining battery capacity.

A thin, substantially planar intelligent battery label for attachment to an exterior surface of a standard battery pack to form an intelligent battery pack having dimensions substantially the same as the standard battery pack. The battery management system is implemented within the battery label as a circuit having a variety of components interconnected by a flex circuit. The components of the battery management system may be located on any desired surface of the standard battery pack so as to minimally interfere with the interoperation of the resulting intelligent battery pack with battery pockets designed to receive the standard battery pack. The battery label may be configured to attach to a wide variety of battery packs through the formation of appropriately placed hinge lines and battery management system components. The battery label is a layered device with battery management circuitry disposed on one surface of a flexible base substrate and covered by an impenetrable outer layer. Positive and negative power tabs are electrically connected the conductive traces and extend away from an edge of the battery label to be electrically connected to positive and negative terminals, respectively, of the standard battery pack. Various circuit components are included, such as status indicators, membrane buttons, and integrated circuits for providing a desired functionality include battery management functions. Bare metal contacts may also be included for communicating, sensing, etc.
