A digital radio frequency (RF) transceiver circuit comprises circuitry that is adapted to select between a transmitter input signal () and a receiver input signal. A plurality of filters are adapted to receive either the transmitter input signal or the receiver input signal and to produce either a filtered transmitter signal or a filtered receiver signal. Circuitry alternatively receives the filtered transmitter signal or the filtered receiver signal and produces a modulated output and a demodulated output.

The disclosed embodiments relate to an apparatus and a method for re-synthesizing signals. The apparatus includes a receiver for receiving a plurality of digitally multiplexed signals, each digitally multiplexed signal associated with a different physical transmission channel, and for simultaneously recovering from at least two of the digital multiplexes a plurality of bit streams. The apparatus also includes a transmitter for inserting the plurality of bit streams into different digital multiplexes and for modulating the different digital multiplexes for transmission on different transmission channels. The method involves receiving a first signal having a plurality of different program streams in different frequency channels, selecting a set of program streams from the plurality of different frequency channels, combining the set of program streams to form a second signal, and transmitting the second signal.

Apparatus and method for re-synthesizing signals

A method for communicating data, such as audio/video (AV) data, over plural channels involves selecting data and encryption information, and encrypting the data with the encryption information to thereby produce encrypted data. The encryption information is broken into portions. The encrypted data is communicated by way of at least one of the plural channels, and at least some portions of the encryption information are communicated over at least one channel other than that one over which the encrypted data is communicated. In a more general case, the encrypted data is sent over one channel, and the encryption information is divided and sent over several other channels.

The disclosed embodiments relate to an apparatus and method for performing frequency translation. The apparatus includes a receiver for receiving and digitizing a plurality of first signals, each signal containing channels and for simultaneously recovering a set of selected channels from the plurality of first signals. The apparatus also includes a transmitter for combining the set of selected channels to produce a second signal. The method of the present invention includes receiving a first signal containing a plurality of different channels, selecting a set of selected channels from the plurality of different channels, combining the set of selected channels to form a second signal and transmitting the second signal.

Apparatus and method for frequency translation

An adaptive digital image processor precedes an MPEG2 encoder. The processor receives a high definition video signal intended for broadcast or storage, and adaptively low-pass filters the signal. The signal is subjected to low-pass two-dimensional filtering to eliminate encoding artifacts and related noise. The video signal is then horizontally down-sampled to create a lower resolution hybrid signal. A receiver decodes and decompresses the hybrid signal. The hybrid signal is upsampled to its original resolution using existing hardware and software with a software modification.

Independent first and second information signals (contentand content) are transmitted over separate independent physical channels to a receiving location. Security is provided by encoding () at least the first information by means of the second information to produce encoded signals (N'). The encoded signals and the second signals are received from the first and second channels at the second location (). The encoded first signals are decoded at the receiving location by processing with the second signals. In some embodiments, the second information signals are encoded by processing with the first information signals. In a more general case, plural channels of information are 'cross-encoded' by the information in plural other channels, and the plurality may be large.

A satellite receiver includes a signal cancellation tuner for processing a plurality of different transponder signals to simultaneously provide a plurality of different bit streams. The signal cancellation tuner includes (a) a demultiplexer for demultiplexing a received signal representing the plurality of transponder signals into a number of decimated signals, each transponder signal conveying a bit stream, and (b) a transform element operative on the number of decimated signals for providing at least two of the bitstreams simultaneously.

A digital filtering system for filtering sample data includes a delay network for delaying input sample data to provide multiple delayed sample data outputs. The filtering system also includes a filter network represented by a decomposed coefficient weighting matrix for processing the delayed sample data outputs. A processor produces a filtered output by computing a weighted product summation of the delayed sample data outputs and the coefficient weighting matrix. The decomposed coefficient weighting matrix is derived by factoring a first coefficient weighting matrix with a common row factor and/or sparse matrix or by factoring based on matrix row or column symmetry.

A method and apparatus for re-modulating an RF carrier modulated signal using a Nyquist folding frequency modulation technique. The method modulates a digitized RF carrier modulated signal with a digital sequence of {1,&#x2212;1,1,&#x2212;1, . . . }, where the center frequency of the RF carrier modulated signal is at a first frequency and the sample rate of the modulating signal is at a second frequency. When the second frequency is four times the first frequency, the output of the digital modulation process is a spectrum-inverted copy of the source RF carrier modulated signal. For all other frequencies, the remodulated RF carrier modulated signal has a center frequency equal to the carrier frequency minus one-half the sample rate of the modulating signal. A spectrum inversion is then performed to recreate the spectrum of the source RF carrier modulated signal, which is now located at a different center frequency. The apparatus comprises a modulating signal source and a digital modulator. A resampler and a spectrum inverter may be used as needed.

Method and apparatus for performing Nyquist folding frequency modulation

A satellite receiver includes a multi-channel tuner for processing a plurality of different transponder signals to simultaneously provide a plurality of different bit streams from at least two of the transponder signals. The multi-channel tuner includes (a) a demultiplexer for demultiplexing a received signal representing the plurality of transponder signals into a plurality of sample signals, each transponder signal conveying a bit stream, (b) a plurality of bifurcated filters operative on the plurality of sample signals for providing a plurality of filtered signals, and (c) a discrete cosine transform element operative on the plurality of filtered signals for simultaneously providing at least two of the bitstreams.

A system for receiving a plurality of broadcast channels transmitted with different polarizations includes a first demodulator for demodulating a first channel having a first polarization to produce a first demodulated channel signal, and a second demodulator for demodulating a second channel having a second polarization, opposite to the first polarization, to produce a second demodulated channel signal. An adaptive interference cancellation network, coupled to the first and second demodulators, cancels interference, derived from the second channel, in the first demodulated channel signal to produce a received signal.

A digital method and apparatus modulates a stream of digitized samples from a source, by a digital representation of a carrier to provide, for example, a 6 MHz bandwidth television signal selectively centered either at 63 MHz (Channel ), 69 MHz (Channel ) or 5.38 MHz IF (baseband). More particularly the method includes first resampling the stream of digitized samples and then modulating the resampled stream of samples with a repeating short sequence of complex values, which complex values represent a digitized exponential carrier.

The disclosed filter structure employs parallel first and second input signal data paths. The first data path includes a digital Finite Impulse Response (FIR) filter having a small number of non-zero multiplier coefficients to define its theoretical impulse frequency response. The second data path includes plural series filters including (1) a digital FIR or Infinite Impulse Response (IIR) filter including a reduced-number of designer-chosen non-zero multiplier coefficients that tend to introduce error sources in the physical-realized filter structure's impulse frequency response and (2) a set of one or more frequency stop filters, each of which permits zero signal transmission therethrough at a different selected frequency. This arrangement anchors the frequency response value of the filter structure near each of the different selected frequencies of the set substantially at the corresponding theoretical impulse frequency response value of the digital FIR filter of the first data path near that one of the plurality of different selected frequencies of the set. The summed outputs of the first and second data paths is the filter output.

Apparatus and method for anchoring predetermined points of the impulse frequency response of a physically-realized filter

Digital remodulation systems typically include digital to analog converters which have an inherent undesirable sin(x)/x frequency response. Digital remodulated signals are typically high frequency and thus not conducive to sin(x)/x pre-correction prior to digital to analog conversion. Described herein is apparatus and a method for pre-correcting the sin(x)/x roll off of the digital to analog converter in the digital signal path prior to the digital modulator which precedes the digital to analog converter. This apparatus corresponds to a cascading of spectrally symmetric and anti-symmetric transversal filters designed to compensate a relatively small portion of the frequency response of the resulting analog signal.
