A child safety seat comprising a seat body and a base, is adapted to be secured on a vehicle seat by a lap strap of a vehicle seat belt. A front foot is pivotally mounted on the front part of the seat body so as to be movable between a first position and a second position in which it projects downwardly from the seat body to a greater extent that when in its first position so as to compress the front part of the vehicle seat cushion. This reduces the extent of angular movement of the child seat which can take place subsequent to installation, for example during an accident, before the front foot abuts against the rigid structure of the vehicle seat with the maximum possible compression of the seat cushion trapped therebetween.

A child safety seat for a motor vehicle comprising a seat body (10) having a back portion (16) and a seat portion (14), an upper back support (34) mounted on the back portion (16) for movement in a direction towards and away from the seat portion (14). The upper back support (34) is movable relative to the back portion (16) and the angle between the upper back support (34) and the seat portion (14) decreases as the upper back support (34) moves towards the seat portion (14).

A safety seat for enabling a child to use an adult vehicle seat belt has a seat portion and respective guides on each side of the seat portion for locating the lap portion of the adult seat belt. A backrest is movable between a deployed position in which it projects upwardly from a rear edge of the seat portion and a stowed position within the seat portion.
